@shibao@misskey.bubbletea.dev eh. they aren't that much more advanced than us, and we've already acquired everything we can from them. it's not like they have FTL warp drives n shit...
the 'little greys' are semi-organic drones that can't live outside their ship. they're more like white blood cells in a host body than they are an independent & free-willed being.
so, yeah, about that crazy tech? fiber optics. mylar. semiconductor doping. the human genome project. things involving extremely high voltages and rotating magnetic fields that nobody can speak of without being party van'd even in today's times. but that's really about it, and like i said there isn't any cool shit like FTL or anti-gravity. no over-unity powerplants.
the limits of technology are that which we see in nature; in this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics.
@PopeASDF@dobbs.town@tk@bbs.kawa-kun.com found 'em, it's the K7QO stuff, but i have two CDs rather than just the one on the site. they came from FISTS at the Dayton Hamvention (back when it was still at Dayton).
okey i have successfully upgraded 5 years worth of mark shuttleworth's cruft. the biggest issue i ran in to was not uninstalling amdgpu-dkms first and waiting until i was totally done before reinstalling it. don't make that mistake and you, too, can do asinine shit like this and get away with it!
finally updated my workstation from some bastardization of a 5 year old ubuntu install + pkgsrc + nixpkgs to a current ubuntu install + pkgsrc + nixpkgs.
somehow it now logs me in to WindowMaker and honestly that's fine. great, even! it's so snappy! also i think vdpau offloading has vanished, i feel like i'm typing through mud in librewolf.
one slight problem tho. the windowing hints librewolf uses are apparently too weird for WM, so tittle bar actions like moving the window around don't work. alt modifier + mouse still works which is my usual way to move/resize shit anyway.
anyway this one module wants llvm14 and that's in a 3rd party repo which gets disabled when using do-release-upgrade so now apt is pissy that dkms fails on every kernel.
so we go to remove the module from dkms and the fucker still tries to build it ... is there a cache i forgot about? maybe a package is inserting itself and not showing up in dkms status?
