I don't get software being political
I will agree that if you use a software just to own the libs or like idk, the trans ppl (soapbox) then maybe you're just an ass.
you like soapbox because you like the interface and it works for you? cool! I dont care.

@david I wish they wouldn't take this angle, just say there's a huge overlap between rust and nuts that will wreck your community with drama if you let them in

I was watching a video today and it was a rant about how the Rust programming language is "woke" and far-left this, far-left that. i was just thinking does it rly matter anyway?
ppl can use what they like, and no one should make an assumption about your political views just because you happen to program in a certain language. im sure there are a lot of centrist and right wing ppl who use Rust too.

@david @tk it is worth mentioning though that this video happened because of a couple prominent projects straight up saying if you are conservative or republican or right wing then you are unwelcome, which is at least conceptually the same thing as "banning woke"

@sun @tk political views shouldn't matter, as long as they are good at coding.
software and politics should be completely separate imo.

@david @tk @sun there is no such thing as an apolitical social space, and programming communities are social spaces. rules and moderation are based on what is considered socially acceptable, and the reality is that this is a political question. am I happy that it is? no. I think there is a certain ethical standard that shouldn't be up for debate, like, at all. but the reality is that it *is* being politically debated. and I'd rather have a project take an explicit stance on that.
that obviously isn't advocating for banning people just based on political affiliation. rather, it's about having rules and anyone who can behave and follow those rules is welcome and anyone who does not behave is not, easy as.

@lizzy @tk @sun yea. just being a nice person is good. U dont have to mention political views because its unrelated to a project.

@lizzy @tk @david I think this is perfectly reasonable take except like it's really hard to say where to draw the line on taking stances. for a while just to be an asshole when projects were making broad proclamations of support for Ukraine I was asking projects to take a stand supporting Palestinians and most of the projects said nothing and some of them actually blocked me. The reality is that most of the stances these projects take are extremely safe stances and not really meaningful
