The meme about Linux being difficult to set up was probably definitely not about installing GNU or GNU-like distributions, but Android.

In the last decade I've install over a dozen of free operating systems on four different architectures, many times on a chroot, and bootstrapping has always been a single step. A child could do it. How do I know? I was something of a child meself.

LineageOS? Thou needst to sacrifice 2 goats, summon a devil, sell thy soul for a holy sword to kill the same fucker to make some devil wellington. Upon savoring such delicacy, thou shalt finally gain the strength to flash the image flasher.

An android is a robot designed to look and act like a human. Recent advances in robotics and digital technology have allowed the design of functional and realistic humanoid robots. @cnx It's odd that memes use the wrong names instead of the relevant one.

Unsurprisingly, the only free version of Android is a breeze to install; https://replicant.us/

You can cheaply get your hands on a new battery and you just put it in (most devices have swappable batteries).

@cnx Linux used to just be really hard to install, for a long time I wouldn't use Debian because the installer was so weird.

@jeffcliff @cnx It isn't - the offered images contain lots of proprietary libraries, including google spyware (like google play).

Even the wikipedia page admits that it's proprietary software.

google SDK's required to build Android are proprietary software, thus to get a free version of Android-AMD64, you would need to download a free SDK, remove all the proprietary libraries (difficult as they're often not marked as such) and spend 80 hours getting it to compile with such free SDK.

        Android-x86
Android-x86 is an open source project that makes an unofficial porting of the Android mobile operating system developed by the Open Handset Alliance to run on devices powered by x86 processors, rather than RISC-based ARM chips. Developers Chih-Wei Huang and Yi Sun originated the project in 2009. The project began as a series of patches to the Android source code to enable Android to run on various netbooks, tablets and ultra-mobile PCs. Huang is the current project maintainer. Currently active developers include Mauro Rossi and Michael Goffioul. Overview The OS is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) with some modifications and improvements. Some components are developed by the project which allow it to run on PC architecture. For instance, some low-level components are replaced to better suit the platform, such as the kernel and HALs. The OS enables OpenGL ES hardware acceleration via Mesa if supported GPUs are detected, including Intel GMA, AMD's Radeon, Nvidia's chipsets (Nouveau), VMware (vmwgfx) and QEMU (virgl). Without a supported GPU, the OS can run in non-accelerated mode via software rendering. Since release...
