Vietnamese breakfast that isn’t pho or rice is just, ‘French breakfast, but add soy sauce’.
I adore it

Always dreaming of this place (also Mark Wiens really knows his shit, I trust his recs more than any ‘influencer’)
@timo21 some woman in CA once laughed at me putting soy sauce on eggs. I was like do you not know where you live? Not putting soy sauce on eggs is weird here
@skinnylatte Whatever the reason, as food travels around the globe, it changes to fit the local culture. On masto here, we had a discussion once about all the variations of pizza around the world. Some purist Italians were unhappy with that, but it's what happens: food recipes get changed in every locality. It's a complement.
Speaking of fusion foods: in Singapore and Malaysia, the Hainanese chefs who used to cook in the British military barracks in the early 1900s also developed their unique strain of ‘British Hainanese food’. It still lives on. I am very fond if it.
Basically ‘add 10x more black pepper, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup and chillies’ to whatever the colonials were eating
@skinnylatte you're now making me dream about fabulous Vietnamese food. One place we stayed at in Sapa made pancakes for breakfast too (with a fair amount of rice flour in the batter), so for me that's also a Vietnamese breakfast
@freshstart yum. vietnam is truly special
luckily i can get a ton of it here in CA but vietnam is wonderful
@skinnylatte it's the coffee that needs a special mention too!
‘Russian’ Chinese food is also very much a thing
@skinnylatte how big is the shared border
@grumpasaurus Russian and northern Chinese food is prob quite diff from this. This is southern. People cooking Russian food due to trade I think
