"Let me just debug wine real quick guys then I'll hop in the match with you I swear"

I've used desktop Linux on and off since I first flashed Ubuntu onto my HDD in middle school, it's just that it kinda sucks.

Some things suck until you get used to them.
Sort of like driving a different car, or moving to a new house.

It's not bad I've used Debian/Ubuntu for the last 10 years, tried Windows 10 in 2020 because of specific software I wanted to use and thought WSL was a good alternate (it's not), but switched back and can actually get things done

I debugged wine once to figure out why a game fan patch doesn't work on linux
:despair:
No wonder wine development takes so long

I hate that Bill Gates is putting a gun to my head to migrate to Windows 11. I can't believe this servant of the Antichrist is really gonna make me use Loonicks unironically.

@Hoss @synapsid @tyler @Nudhul really the only reason you'd want to use ltsc is to avoid instant bitrot on a fresh windows install.. on a hard drive
it's like bill comes into your house and Bruce's fucking food reviews your hard disk, it runs extremely slowly under those disks now especially with all of the crapware that comes preinstalled with windows 10/11

No need to pirate Windows 10, it just bitches at you to activate the product for years without actually doing anything to stop you.

Pretty funny when people trust pirates and their malware more than Microsoft

Same, seeing memes like these isn't helping either because I have to wonder how much of them is hyperbole.

I read a funny article once that analogized windows to buying a Honda and linux to getting a free tank built by bums that beg for food.

Oh fuck so they're all 100% accurate?!

At least I know how to fix it. I've read every forum and you either (1) reboot, (2) run the system file checker, and (3) reinstall windows.

I wish Windows was as reliable as a Honda. 😒

There are issues from time to time, but there are also forums that are helpful provided you're not using wayland or pipewire, both of which tend to be too new to have full forum support. But for general office use, X11 with Pulse Audio works.
As for vidya, I retrograme at best, and retroarch works. So....
In reality though, and for me, it's more about getting back to simplicity, but also having control. I spend most of my time in nvim, including drafting emails and type setting pdfs. I've made a myriad of scripts to automate most of my practice, including making estate plans from csv data. My next project is to switch from quickbooks to hledger. I've been working on a script to get from timedot (a time keeping function) to invoicing. As of this morning, I'm able to export data for time keepers, total columns, sum fees, and type set the table with date, description, time, fee. I just need to add advanced costs and automate posting, and my invoicing will become 10x quicker than using quickbooks.

That's the thing that bothers me about Linux. Constant trouble shooting. Maybe I just need two machines. One for general internet usage running linux and one mostly offline computer with windows for the vidya.
That I like mods in my vidya poses a huge issue though.

steamos is not suitable for a general purpose desktop

I heard there was steamOS but I wasn't sure how it'd handle things that weren't steam related. I do a lot of retrogames too and have been upset many of them aren't compatible with Windows 10 or even 7.
Might look into Retroarch.

Only had 1 driver issue recently for an obscure wifi dongle since I didn't want to run a cable, it's in the 6.13 kernel though and i won't have to compile the dkms module once we upgrade our release

However, in this house, we all game on Kubuntu and it's totally fine.

Had the same issue. Couldn't mount an ext4 micro sd in a lexar dongle. It froze the computer. I just switched to 6.12, and everything was fine.
