   I just finished setting up my server, but I don't understand why it's lacking the activity counter (likes, responses, shares). This is how it looks in your instance vs mine:

     @test_test I'm not sure why we don't federate stats, probably so people can't manipulate trends. But the reason the count is correct on my server is because I have every actual Like and Repost object in my database to back it up. You only have the post itself.

     I wanted to go deeper and ended up reading some documentation and threads and whatnot. Just by interacting with some other folks my feed is getting some activity now.
     
     One more question: Is the Fediverse timeline only available through the 'More...' menu? I've seen that's the welcome page for some instances using the Pleroma FE. I would like to make that option 1) easily accessible and 2) make it somehow the landing page for non-logged users. Is that doable?

     @mint @test_test @alex I actually worked with a team that paid to do a case study on Fediverse usability and one of the biggest complaints we had from the user feedback was that the federated timeline was extremely confusing and overwhelming.
     
     "It's like being thrust into a party of strangers and they're all talking about different topics simultaneously and you don't who is who or what is what and you never asked for any of these posts" essentially

     I’m running Rebased, and my experience is that the instance won’t really pick up things from before it started federating with another particular server. Take a look at some posts from Gleasonator that are posted/interacted with later, and you’ll see much more correct numbers

     @mint @alex @test_test what we need is search service that at least works by hashtag so people can use hashtags to find posts based on the topics they want.
     
     forcing people to join an entire server for a topic is not acceptable as the only option
     
     instances need to opt in and all public posts with hashtags should go to this service so there's some real discoverability on the fediverse
     
     we really, really need these centralized indexes. people need to be able to find the information they're looking for. this is an information sharing service, not a private communications network

     @dia @test_test @mint Improved follower suggestions, trends, groups. I'm not going to remove the Fediverse timeline entirely, but we have to acknowledge if our goal is to grow the Fediverse, it's not a helpful feature for new users.

     How about this instead. If someone's post is visible only to their followers and I reply to it, the default visibility for my reply is that only *my* followers can see it. Seems to be the case across the Fediverse. Also seems not to make any sense.

     @mint @test_test @alex the counter argument here is that the TKWN doesn't scale. for small and big instances it means a lot of extra hosting costs (being flooded by thousands of streaming updates) and noise (not finding anything useful). I used akkoma's bubble timeline feature to add instances to make a custom TKWN because TKWN has been useless lately with the flood of twitter refugees
