A few months ago I did an Irish goodbye and quit all the commercial social platforms (Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn) I was using. I was barely active there anyway, posting once every blue moon.
I'm thinking of reactivating these accounts for a hot minute to tell people where to find me...
Do you have any experience with this? Any advice on best practices?
(And I realize I'm sending this at the wrong time but I'm about to pick up my little one from pre-school & won't see responses for a while)

@mjj thanks Morten. Indeed I was thinking of doing a 2-in-1 meaning: announcing where people can now find me and boosting the Fediverse, telling friends I can help them set up accounts here if they’re interested

@_elena You are, looking at Google, Bing and Kagi, completely discoverable outside of those media sites. So I feel there is little need, except if you want to communicate that there are healthier media spaces.

@kerfuffle nope but I always positively loathed LinkedIn and in my field (filmmaking / photography) it was absolutely useless

breve ed efficace con un link unico che raccoglie tutti i luoghi dove i tuoi contatti potranno raggiungerti.
Ovviamente le frasi più colorite non te le consiglio ma essenzialmente la struttura di lettera di "arrivederci su altri lidi" è efficace senza essere eccessivamente polemica e rancorosa.

Thank you for all your thoughtful responses to my question about how to announce on commercial platforms that you are leaving.
I may keep my accounts deactivated… and EMAIL the people I want to keep in touch with instead. One big reason:
The opaque algorithms of Big Tech may hide my post, esp if it contains keywords like “leaving” and “find me here instead” with a link to an external site.
In my email, I will definitely boost the Fediverse and volunteer to help friends set up accounts here 🤗

@kerfuffle there are professional organizations where you build a network… the D Word for documentaries, the Video Consortium for new media, Women in Film (across various cities) for directing gigs, etc. 99% of the freelance gigs I’ve booked have been through word of mouth.
In your case, I would look up people on Vimeo in your city. There’s a “for hire” / “available for work” badge and I booked people that way when producing remote videos

@_elena Out of interest (and hijacking your thread, sorry): How do you do networking in that field? Just keep a rolodex and bookmark peoples portfolio pages? I've been looking for people to commission a music video & cover art and have no idea how to find the people and get the right question out to them. LinkedIn indeed doesn't really cater to it.

@_elena I personally wouldn’t bother. I have my website in all my bios, and a contact page prominent on there with the links I want folks to have. I also have a /hello page for socials (kind of like a self-hosted linktree)
Long story short, don’t reactivate your accounts, because it reinforces their idea that they’re indispensable. Just make it impossibly easy to find you on the broader web
