    https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/other/a-30-million-campaign-to-free-social-media-from-billionaire-control-is-now-underway/ar-BB1rotwo

    >"For the first time, we have a clear pathway to securing the future of social media as a tool for connection, creativity, and joy," Nabiha Syed, Executive Director of Mozilla Foundation

    >The initiative, called "Free Our Feeds," aims to create independent infrastructure around the AT Protocol, an open-source technology that powers the Bluesky social network, and allows anyone to build their own social media applications

Interesting that Mozilla bailed on Fediverse just last year, saying they needed to focus their resources on the browser and AI shit:

    https://techcrunch.com/2024/09/17/mozilla-exits-the-fediverse-and-will-shutter-its-mastodon-server-in-december

...yet here they are shilling Bluesky's protocol as the "first time ever" fix for corpo social media.

@japananon @adiz ATProto is very similar to LBRY and other web3 social protocols. The team replaced blockchain nodes with PDSes at the back end (this is a good thing), but there is still big centralized frontend that everyone uses. Alternative frontends can be created, but their developers need to compete with a core team, this is an uphill battle and no web3 social has ever achieved meaningful decentralization. Except maybe Nostr, which has many independent frontends (relays are basically the same thing as PDSes). But this is only because there was no core team with VC funding and bitcoiners really wanted it to be decentralized.

@adiz I think my got my answers here:

      https://dustycloud.org/blog/how-decentralized-is-bluesky/

If I'm reading this correctly, Bluesky offers the possibility for users to host Personal Data Servers, but this really just offloads storage onto the end users. Message delivery is handled by dumping all messages onto relays, which are sifted through by applications called "AppViews" who pick out and forward them to users.

There is currently only one relay run by Bluesky Inc, and since it's expected to store literally everything for everyone, you'd need 5 terabytes of storage (and growing) to create one. I don't know what's involved with running an AppView instance, but I imagine it's not simple and right now apparently there's only one and it's also run by Bluesky Inc

So the devil in the details appears to be "sure you can host your own data on your own PDS, but whether anybody gets to see anything you post (or vice versa) depends on a service that's too big for anybody but a corpo to run, and we run the only one everybody uses". The relay/AppView layer appears to be where algorithmic stuff for user feeds is done as well, so there's your chokepoint for deciding who gets to see what (or doesn't).

@adiz That's what I'd like to know. I just recently discovered that FUTO's shit isn't as "open source" as I thought it was, and I remember how LBRY was technically "open source", but designed in such a way to be as unfriendly/unintuitive to 3rd party developers as possible, so now I'm very skeptical of any supposed "decentralized project" until it proves itself.

From what I can find via quick search, atproto is dual-licensed under MIT and Apache 2.0, so it appears to get the gold star of approval from the FSF at least:

      https://github.com/bluesky-social/atproto/tree/main?tab=readme-ov-file#license

But I have no idea if they're playing any tricks under the hood. The Guides section of atproto makes reference to self-hosting a "Personal Data Server". But I don't understand any of this enough to be able to figure out if there's any fuckery going on.

@japananon Can AT Protocol even function in an uncontrolled, decentralized way? I though they abandoned that very early on into development, like after their white paper.

@japananon Mozilla is fully corrupt. They positioned themselves as some kind of open source entity, while being a puppet of Google and handing the browser market to Google. Mitchell Baker was compensated lavishly for that play.

IE would be fixed and the web would still be cursed as today but with activeX instead.

Instead of arguing about it, here are some examples of Firefox being broken as of recently. It took almost no effort to find my posts and they are probably a few more.

You know how many bugs I encountered in Chromium and Brave every time I tried them for a month when FF was unusable for me? Zero. Not even a memleak that FF likes to do every few months after an update.

And with Brave, many of the lacking options in base Chromium were added like blocking AutoPlay. There are only two things I don't like about Brave. They are an ad company and they crypto/AI BS baked right into the browser (can be disabled in brave://flags; the equivalent of about:config).
And all the annoying new buttons that are in Brave can be hidden, while the new annoying buttons with zero purpose added to FF cannot be hidden without hiding them via userChrome.css.

I would really like to test the video issue you're experiencing.

As for the AI options if you really want to remove them then you have to compile it yourself (not hard) or use a fork like https://icecatbrowser.org/index.html https://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/gnuzilla.git/

      >The one on the far left next to the first tab and the one on the far-right which is supposed to be for searching tabs or something.
The one on the far left is movable as you saw in the original video.
And I had not notice the one on the right before you mentioned it so I checked and it's also movable.
If you're looking for the UI settings in the about:config it's named "browser.uiCustomization.state"
