@mkj @futurebird @toni I wasn't privy to internal mod discussions but I was there at the time, and "how it was handled by the company" angle came across clearly as an excuse by people who were upset about "forced speech". The questions she raised were not valid except from a standpoint like "will the company really back me when I moderate disguised transphobia like this?" which was not the take.

  @dalias @mkj @futurebird “just asking questions” and “still carrying a grudge years later” are also bigot specials.
  I was also there, and I would’ve long forgotten about it without all the “remember Monica” users.

  @cxj @toni @mkj @futurebird Monica was the "just asking questions" mod who deemed it excessive to demand users acknowledge and correctly gender trans users.
  A bunch of other transphobic mods and users put "remember Monica", "justice for Monica", etc. in their display names after she was removed.

  @cxj @toni @mkj @futurebird Funny story... up to that point, OT political posting on SO was at least highly discouraged if not disallowed.
  I opened a question on meta asking if these Monica messages in display names were allowed, would I also be allowed to put something antifascist in mine.
  Got hundreds of downvotes but ok to do it. "GitHub STOP HELPING ICE" has been in my display name since.
