If I change #Matrix server softwares while using the same hostname, how badly am I likely to screw everything up?

I started off with Conduit and I'm regretting it. I'm not so invested in the setup that I need to keep my chat history, I just don't want some inter-domain encryption key shenanigans to happen if suddenly socially.drinkingatmy.computer is now a different homeserver. A web search didn't return anything useful.

    Kikuri for your time.

@prettygood it shouldn’t make any problems for you, especially if you nuke and restart
Others can deal with it but more than likely they’ll just get user encryption warnings

@prettygood ive done so once or twice in the past and it didn't seem to cause any issues, but im also aware of some servers having issues resolving state and also that in the synapse>dendrite migration you're supposed to bring keys with.
take it with a grain of salt, and it shouldn't work in theory, but it worked for me.

Well, the impact of the homeserver keys changing is implementation defined

You might trigger synapse bugs, but other than that, things should generally work fine. Probably.

Ofc keeping the keys and only throwing away the database would be best. Aka, migrating the keys. Specifically, the identity public keys.

I don't know what backfill will do with events with differing keys. Your HS *shouldn't* really be rejecting them or the auth DAG might break, but :thread:1/

@prettygood but then again if it wouldn't reject invalid stuff in the auth DAG then homeservers could forge things. Hmm. There's an old keys field for migrating keys... We'd need to inspect the returned key format. But best would be to save your private keys and migrate them over to your new server software.

@ity I don't suppose you know where those keys might be in Conduit's database? I can hunt, but just asking.

@doskel @prettygood you should probably leave all rooms youre in for servers to get in a reasonable state and wait a while until all the keys expire before setting a new homeserver up

@ity I'm sorry to hear that, even if I laughed a little. They've been helpful with some issues I had but I want to switch to Synapse because I can't join certain rooms, as well as some other weird behavior.

@prettygood No idea, we stopped looking into conduit after we got harassed by the developers (of Conduit and all the forks too)

@prettygood Yea as long as you never mention any controversial topics ever they are nice

God forbid that you blasphemy the neverland, the glorious freedomland, The United States of America though. Instaban from anywhere and everywhere they can convince the mods of the rooms. Even if it's just a small "we disagree" on a US law that doesn't exist in most of the EU being amazing.

Just ignore it whenever they talk about anything even remotely political and you'll be fine.

@prettygood *unless* you talk about any of the Conduit forks in the room for any other other Conduit fork. Then you won't be fine.
