In 2022, the Steam Deck jump-started the modern handheld gaming scene, and confidently showed the world that Linux could be leveraged for a smooth and performant gaming experience. A mainstream audience embraced it. Critics applauded its ease-of-use compared to Windows. And now Lenovo validates it all with the world’s first officially licensed handheld powered by SteamOS.

I assure you that this is the first of many! 🎉

@reb Yep, it's hard to believe! And it was EARLY 2022. This is my original review: https://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonevangelho/2022/02/25/steam-deck-review-an-unrivaled-portable-gaming-powerhouse/

A console nearly 11 years in the making, the Steam Deck is finally here. But can Valve's second attempt at Linux-powered hardware deliver an awesome gaming experience?

@killyourfm did the deck really only come out in 2022? It's become such a fixture that it feels like it should have been around longer!

Also, I was downright gleeful over this quote I included from Lenovo:
"The Legion Go S Powered by SteamOS is a big step forward in freedom of choice for gamers who are looking for an OS that is optimized for handheld gaming.”

@ReverseModule Very exciting times! Now that Lenovo took the first step, others (ASUS, etc) will feel compelled to follow. If they're not already working with Valve...

Btw, you see Nvidia is doing a native Steam Deck app for GeForce Now? IT'S ALL HAPPENING.

@killyourfm This is so HUGE! As more and more companies start using Linux by default the marketshare will go up and then even anticheat companies will have to take notice! These are exciting times! :)

      > Legion Go S (8”, 1) powered by SteamOS will be available starting May 2025, expected starting price of $499.99. Since it has identical specs as the non-SteamOS model, this indicates a $100 savings over the Windows 11 model.

@killyourfm It jumpstarted what?! For PC and Linux sure, but let’s credit the Nintendo DS, 3DS, and mostly Switch for all selling in excess of 100 million units.

@keyboardg That's a fair nitpick. It jumpstarted the PC gaming handheld scene. I think products like the Switch (and Vita, GBA, etc) exist in a very different space, but I should be more articulate with that phrasing.

@chris I feel this, Chris. You know, I've been a primarily PC gamer for more than a decade, but there are certain events that kept pulling me back to consoles, or console-like devices (such as Steam Deck).

My recent review of the ridiculously powerful HP Omen almost tempted me into finally building another PC for myself, but seeing how bloated and expensive GPUs keep getting, I just... it really turns me off.

I'm with you. Give me a SteamOS box with roughly the power of a PS5? I'm happy.

@killyourfm Good news indeed. All PCs in our home are between 5-12y old and I can already tell that I won't buy any new 'gaming pc' but instead a handheld gaming console at some point in the future. Opening up the market for handheld consoles based on SteamOS is a gamechanger - I hope we will see some real innovation (not just Steam Deck clones) and a wide choice of consoles for every budget in the next few years 🤞 :vaultboy:

It's worth highlighting that the SteamOS model will cost $100 less than the equivalent Windows 11 model. This is a substantial savings!

@tom Huh. I mean $100 does seem like a big discrepancy. What's the cost to OEMs? MAYBE $10?

I didn't see the difference in specs anywhere. Would you mind pointing me to the source? Thanks!

@killyourfm I said the same thing earlier, I thought it was just the Windows Tax™ that was different.

but apparently the base windows version is 1TB while the base steam os version is 512gb. For some reason.

I got it from verge https://www.theverge.com/2025/1/7/24338028/lenovo-legion-go-s-steam-windows

But the Windows version shipping in January will cost $729.99, with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. In May, the true experiment will begin when gamers can pick between a $499.99 SteamOS version with 16GB / 512GB, a $599.99 Windows version with 16GB / 1TB, or the Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED at $399 and $549, respectively.
