    Day 5 - Genesis 16

1Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. 2So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the Lord has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall [a]obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

Verse 2, Abram listens to his wife (😞). God hadn't explicitly said "Sarai will be the way in which you bear children" in prior verses, so likely this wasn't out of lack of faith. He takes Hagar, his wife's Egyptian servant As a wife and she becomes pregnant. Once pregnant, she starts to hate Sarai probably for getting the majority of Abram's love and affection. Sarai gets mad because her servant is pregs and is being rude to her. Logically (lol, LMAO) she takes it out on Abram. In fairness to her, it was his fault for listening to his wife 😎. Abram tells her to deal with her however she wants, and she starts to get really mean towards her, causing Hagar to flee. God finds her at a spring, which scares her. God tells her to return and submit to Sarai, and that He will multiply her lineage so that they cannot be counted.

11 And the angel of the Lord said to her, “Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael [God hears] because the Lord has listened to your affliction. 12 He shall be a wild donkey of a man,his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him, and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.”

I've heard this stated as the father of the races that eventually bore Mohammed and the Muslims, since they've had perpetual war against Christianity.

Abraham listening to his wife is how the world got two Semitic rather than just one. :jahy_headache:

      From Eerdman's Dictionary"
      HAVILAH
      (Heb. ḥăwîlâ)
      (PLACE)

「A region surrounded by the Pishon River, known for its fine gold, bdellium, and onyx stone (Gen. 2:11-12). Etymologically, the name is probably derived from the West Semitic root ḥwl “sand,” and thus refers to the “land of sand.” Because of the enigmatic, or mythic, geography of Eden, it is uncertain whether Havilah refers to a specific locality known to Israel (probably in Arabia) or is used generally to refer to the desert region outside the garden.

Elsewhere, Havilah refers to a specific region of Arabia or to Arabia in general which was known for its gold, precious stones, and valuable resins. In the Table of Nations, Havilah is listed as a descendent of Cush (Gen. 10:7) and of Joktan (v. 29). In both cases it is associated with known regions of Arabia such as Sheba and Dedan. Havilah is also mentioned as the easternmost region settled by the Ishmaelites (Gen. 25:18) and later by the Amalekites (1 Sam. 15:7). Some scholars have associated Havilah with the region of Haulan in southwest Arabia, first attested in an Old Sabean inscription and preserved in the name of two modern Yemenite tribal groups.」

Mohammad and the Arabs attributing their lineage to Abraham through Ishmael is one of the few claims made by Islam that is probably accurate, instead of all the other nonsense they perpetuated.

      Genesis 17

God appears before Abram when he's 99 years old. Abram falls on his face, presumably out of respect for God? God repeats his promise that Abram won't be a stranger in a strange land but the land will belong to his offspring. God renames him from Abram (exalted father) to Abraham (father of a multitude). Here God establishes the covenant of circumcision and says that every child at 8 days old must be circumcised, including any slave or anyone brought into their house, and those who don't do it are cut off from God's covenant. God renames Sarai to Sarah (literally "Princess") because she is to become the mother of many great men and kings. God explicitly states He will give Abraham a son through Sarah and he falls on his face laughing.

17 Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his heart, “Shall a child be born to a man who is one hundred years old? And shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” 18And Abraham said to God, “Oh, that Ishmael might live before You!”

God hears this and instead of getting mad, tells him that it's going to happen, and that He will also bless Ishmael and make him the father of many princes and kings. He says his son will be named "Isaac". God says this time next year, his 90 year old wife will give birth (based). Every male in Abraham's house is circumcised.

      Genesis 18

Abraham is in the shade during the heat of the day when The Lord and two angels appear under a large tree. He runs from the tent and bows to the ground and asks that, if he has found favor, they stay for a bit and wash their feet and eat and drink a bit. They agree, and Abraham runs back to his tent and gets everybody moving to make a good meal ASAP. Sarah makes three cakes from fine flour, Abraham grabs a tender good calf and has his servant prepare it while he gets butter, cream, and everything else ready and placed it before them. He stands near them as they eat. Then The Lord asks where Sarah is. A lot happens here, so I'm posting the whole section:

9Then they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” So he said, “Here, in the tent.” 10And He said, “I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son.”

Sarah gets to hear God's promise. Good knows she is listening and wants to prove a point.

11Now Abraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age; and Sarah had passed the age of childbearing. 12Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?”

Notice she doesn't even say it out loud, but only thinks it.

13And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ 14Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Called out. Must have been terrifying.

15But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”

Terrified wifejak.jpg. Imagine trying to defend yourself to the creator of the universe when He can and does read your thoughts in your heart. I don't think this was done to make her feel bad, but to strengthen her faith. I doubt there was much questioning of God's promise to her after the fact.

One interesting point is the angels appearing as three. Many have argued that this was or was not The Holy Trinity appearing before Abraham, and treatises have been written on the subject (seriously). I believe the three were at least symbolic of the Trinity, and at the very least it was Christ and two angels. The Icon of The hospitality of Abraham depicts one of the three wearing the same garments typically worn by Christ in Iconography. This is also one of my favorite pieces of Christian art, along with the protective cover or riza (commissioned by Ivan the Terrible) made to protect the tempura. The artist believed it was The Trinity, hence the decision to adorn all three with gold and jewels on the riza.

@BowsacNoodle I believe the three visitors to be symbolic of the Trinity, but not the actual Trinity. God the Father never appears in a form that can be reckoned by humans and if I recall He says to Moses later that He simply can't be seen, man would die from being faced with the Incomprehensible. Also, in the next chapter the two men with the Lord are explicitly referenced as angels. They are very beautifully symbolic of the Trinity however and at one point I believe they are referred to as acting as one. "They said" and so on.

Sarah's inner thoughts and the Lord's calling her out is an important bit to remember, especially when reading the gospels. The gospel writers, particularly Matthew, consistently call back to this interaction by using similar language. Someone thinks something "within themselves" then the Lord responds, "Why do you...?" The gospel writers saw Jesus as the same Lord that interacted with Abraham and the rest of the forefathers.

@Appalachian_Crusader @BowsacNoodle AND RUBLEV'S ICON OF HOSPITALITY WAS ALSO SUPPOSED TO BE SYMBOLIC OF THE TRINITY RATHER THAN HIM THINKING THAT IT WERE LITERALLY FATHER SON AND SPIRIT VISITING ABRAHAM IN THE GUISE OF ANGELS

HE DOES HAVE LIKE LITTLE SUBTLE WAYS TO SIGNAL THAT THEY REPRESENT THE TRINITY IN HIS ICON, LIKE THE ONE IN THE GREEN ROBE IS A SIGN OF THE HOLY SPIRIT BECAUSE THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE AUTHOR OF LIFE ETC

      Genesis 18: addendum -

The two angels with The Lord depart for Sodom to check out whether it's so wicked it deserves destruction. Abraham bargains from 50 to 10 in his pleading to God about destroying the city, and God agrees not to destroy it if there's even 10 righteous people in the whole City-State.

@mitchconner @Appalachian_Crusader The Angel of The Lord? Good chance it's Jesus, by a lot of interpretations. Some Eastern Christians even think Michael is another name for Christ because He casts Satan into hell.

Yeah, my pastor keeps talking about these secret cameos that Christ made before He was actually incarnated in Mary's womb. Starts to kind of sound like Gnosticism to me. I'm not really sure why mainstream Christianity hates them so much. We love our mysterious Lord, don't we folks
