I don't think nitrogen is used heavily by life except for within proteins and aminos. And life processes are very particular about aminos; spontaneously occurring chemical aminos are left-handed (actually rotating polarized light to the left) and right-handed, in an even distribution. But aminos in biological tissues are left-handed.
Given that biologically necessary aminos are relatively rare from raw chemical reactions, it makes sense that higher life has to assimilate them through the food chain. -

correction: nitrogen is used by life in protein formation, and also in nucleic acids. However, bodies contain much more protein-based tissues (by mass) than nucleic acids; and protein-based tissues are destroyed and replaced much more quickly than genetic material.
The vast majority of tonnage of nitrogen absorbed and used over one's lifetime is spent forming protein-based tissues.翠星石 likes this. -
