I don't think nitrogen is used heavily by life except for within proteins and aminos. And life processes are very particular about aminos; spontaneously occurring chemical aminos are left-handed (actually rotating polarized light to the left) and right-handed, in an even distribution. But aminos in biological tissues are left-handed.
Given that biologically necessary aminos are relatively rare from raw chemical reactions, it makes sense that higher life has to assimilate them through the food chain.
