correction: nitrogen is used by life in protein formation, and also in nucleic acids. However, bodies contain much more protein-based tissues (by mass) than nucleic acids; and protein-based tissues are destroyed and replaced much more quickly than genetic material.
The vast majority of tonnage of nitrogen absorbed and used over one's lifetime is spent forming protein-based tissues.
