I'm only moderately good at chess, and swordfights seem like physical chess.
My strategy is usually to just do whatever and then try to logic my way out of trouble, which usually succeeds, although it usually ends quite pyrrhically.

Fencing is nothing like chess. You have to train yourself to react. There's no planning or thinking. It's sorta like chess in that you want to advance. You always want to push your opponent down the lane .. even hitting off target can be beneficial since you push back the start point.
In Foil the legs are off target. In Epee you can score on the legs, but it's dumb luck if you do. Arms are the easiest. -

The drawing seems to be depicting an early form or predecessor of Epee. What is "real" fencing? The three major sport forms come from some very old sword fighting styles: Foil, Saber and Epee. Foil was just a training style, but Saber is based on how carvery riders fought in the civil war (lower body is off target, because you want to kill the man and not the horse .. horse is worth money). -

@djsumdog @sathariel @Paradox I don't think anyone was talking about modern olympic fencing, but rather real fencing, since the source of the discussion is a historical fencing manual that illustrates one fighter lunging for the legs and the other fighter responding by driving his sword through the first fencer's skull.
Fencing might not be, but football is a lot closer to chess, minus the dice. -

I use to enjoy it but I haven't done it in years. Epee was my favorite. Saber I only tried a few times and never really liked. Did Saber have right-of-way? That's the most annoying part about Foil. -

@Alex @djsumdog @sathariel @Paradox @nerthos I actually got into fencing for a while because of fighting games lol. Unfortunately, it's nothing like footsies because your starting position is far too close. It's more like an elaborate game of drawing boxes in the air and building muscle memory for when either person makes a move from whatever position each person is holding. I don't know a good analogy. Maybe Saber fencing is closer to vidya, it seemed more kinetic but I didn't get too into it to begin with.

@djsumdog @sathariel @Paradox Out of the three modern fencing styles, saber is the only one I appreciate and respect, becuase it still somewhat resembles actual fighting and not just a points game. djsumdog likes this.
