Shoutout to Amazon for automatically updating my Kindle version of "Leviathan Wakes" -- which I purchased before the Expanse was a TV series -- to "Leviathan Wakes: Book 1 of the Expanse (Now a Prime Original series)"
    😒

    That bullshit ends TODAY.

@killyourfm isn't Kobo also applying DRM?

If you find a store that sells books DRM free, I would love to know about it.

@pak0st My example is more about Amazon's ownership over my Kindle library; being able to change covers, titles, and even content.

Kobo does have DRM *if* the publisher demands it. Otherwise they don't.

@killyourfm Amazon's renaming of titles and keyword stuffing has become so ridiculous. With The Expanse its obviously Amazon advertising Prime Video (in a book title!). Some publishers aren't much better, these are actual book titles 😱

@killyourfm Good luck with freeing your books! I just recently went trough the whole process (and over 1000+ comic books that I originally bought on Comixology before Amazon bought and killed the platform). Calibre with KFX and DeDRM 10.0.9 worked fine for me except for some new books published in 2024 🤔 I'm done with Amazon, I'm using Kobo, Libbyapp and epubs from our local public library now.

@killyourfm if you don’t want your Kobo to phone everything home via Google Analytics (yep they do that), the steps described in this post apply to the Kobo Colour as well. My wife has one, and she loves it!

This is neat! A stats screen for the book you're currently reading, and progress stats for your entire library. (It's showing ~4 hours because I've only had my Kobo for a couple of days).

@killyourfm you have no idea how mad I am with the fact that Amazon has monopoly in e-ink readers in my country (Brazil)

The only way to buy any alternative to Kindle is paying a large import tax from US or Europe (Kindle : R$ 400. Kobo Sage: R$ 2700)

@bcon @killyourfm if you’re on an ancient paperwhite it’s worth it for your health. No, really. If you read in the evening or at night and use the paperwhite’s light you’re getting blue light which disrupts melatonin which is needed for good sleep. The kobo (and newer Kindles to be fair) can adjust the colour of the light to red orange hues which is far kinder to you eyes and you sleep cycles 😊

FYI: If you've been considering a switch away from Kindle, now would be the time to pull the trigger. At the very least, get yourself a copy of Calibre and backup your Kindle purchases ASAP.
