@grillchen @ozy @koakuma its definitely stuff built with a mission life.
are they still grossly underclocking stuff and jamming it full of graphite bricks?-

@koakuma@uwu.social @icedquinn@blob.cat @grillchen@brotka.st the arm macbook air doesn't have active cooling, and that's apparently how apple decided to artificially lower performance

@koakuma@uwu.social @icedquinn@blob.cat @grillchen@brotka.st apple always does something to artificially reduce the usefulness of their products, like limiting the USB-C connector to USB 2.0 on their iphones despite the SoC being USB4 capable, or limiting external displays to 1 on some macbooks
this is probably one of those things :ameowmelt: -

@ozy @koakuma @grillchen they've been doing that trick since some intel macs.
they basically pack the case with power cell bombs to get the all day battery life, cut the rest with graphite blocks to be passive heat sinks, and make up the difference by underclocking. so they have 3-4 ghz processors permanetly running at like 1.4
then they advertise it as a "turbo boost" which basically means its a 3ghz that dies when the thermal throttling sets in
same thing some NUCs do; they sometimes get reviews like "i can play a game for 30 minutes!" and i'm pretty sure that's because they saturate their heat sinks & pathetic active sink at that amount of workload -

@icedquinn @grillchen @ozy The Arm ones are definitely better but I've never loaded them enough to see if and/or how much do they throttle
