A little surprised to see enhyphen in my top 5 artists cos I don't really seek them out. I think they just keep ending up on my auto-generated for-you playlists because of overlap with other artists that I like.
Yeah I know Spotify is shit when it comes to paying artists for their work.
I've tried other streaming services that pay artists better (although I'm not aware of any that pay artists an amount that I'd consider fair).
So far, I haven't found a streaming service other than Spotify that actually has most of the artists I want to listen to.
I also like the algorithms on Spotify that keep bringing new artists to my attention, that I wouldn't otherwise have heard of.
At this point, I've given up on finding an alternative music streaming service.
Instead I support my favourite artists in other ways.
But that means my money's only going to a handful of favourites, instead of being spread fairly among the many many artists that I actually listen to.
I'm never going to find time and money to support 300 individual artists through Bandcamp or similar.
It sucks.
Please someone establish a genuine competitor to Spotify that comes at least somewhat close to providing similar features and benefits *and* pays artists fairly.
I would be willing to pay considerably more for something like that.
Actually it's been a couple of years since I last looked seriously at YouTube music as an alternative. I wonder if it's better than it used to be, and how their artist payout rates compare.
I tried Tidal again earlier this year and its music catalog is only about a 50% match for my taste.
@rinmari I might give it another try, then. I used to use it a few years ago as my primary streaming service, but eventually gave up and switched to Spotify because of how much better it was from a listener's perspective
@lookitmychicken I use YTM since I can also listen to videos as music and also upload songs to my personal library, and for discovering artists and sharing playlists (since YouTube playlists aren't paywalled).
Of course, if I really like a particular artist then I look for ways to buy the music directly from them, like Bandcamp or Itch.
@glitchontwitch yeah it can be a bitch to try to use most of the Asian music streaming services as a westerner, especially when my own non-english language skills are not great.
I like that many of the Asian video streaming services are providing more support for international audiences. I hope the music services move more in that direction too.
Back in the days of my more "hardcore" kpop fanning, when I'd do as many songs and dances as possible in order to maximize my group (VIXX)'s chance of a music show win, I would have brief subscriptions to melon during their promotional periods.
I really liked melon back then. There were some moments I considered getting it permanently, but the song and dance required someone in South Korea to help me with paying for it.
@lookitmychicken@rinmari i definitely think its worth trying again! thats all i use, and it has a fairly robust algorithm, includes lyrics, and has a lot of indie artists that refuse/aren't popular enough for spotify. it also has an end of year wrapped in the same vein as spotify and does this on a seasonal basis too
@lookitmychicken I feel exactly the same! I’ve become really dependent on Spotify and wouldn’t want to be without it, but it rankles *so much* how objectively terrible they are
@lookitmychicken@rinmari basically the same if its just through music streaming, but they payout is much more complicated because there are different tiers of payout if the artist has a video of the same song (which is also connected to youtube music). video streaming earns more than just song streaming, and if the channel has ads, theres also that revenue even if you have youtube premium. they also get a payout if they enroll a song in ID detection, so if their song is used in a video, they get a cut of the profits or have the option to file a takedown notice
im not finding anything specific with the figures, likely because youtube's system is much more complicated. i wouldn't be surprised if the song streaming only payout is the same, but the vast majority of artists i see (especially small indie ones) upload videos for all of their songs, so i imagine that helps
