@mosseri just announced that #Threads users can finally follow fediverse accounts. Which means you can now reach 200M people from your Mastodon account without ever using Threads yourself. True decentralization happens on the fediverse!
@Gargron@mosseri there's going to a lot of crap there and I would not rely on it to work long term. Remember Google's xmpp service? If it stops benefitting Zuckerberg it'll be gone.
@Gargron@mosseri Interoperability as a general principle is a good thing (and if done on equal and equitable terms), but some of us would much prefer that our posts aren’t accessible by certain networks. Are #Mastodon posts inaccessible by #Threads by default (or would we sadly need to take some sort of definite action to prevent them from being able to access our posts)?
@TamaraSellman@mosseri Your private information does not leave me.dm. If someone from Threads follows your account, they'll see your posts in their home feed.
@Gargron@mosseri help me to understand this. Can Zuck access my data in Masto now? Because I came to Masto to get away from his data probing tentacles...
@Gargron@mosseri I don't see this as a good thing. Facebook, Threads, Instagram etc. are so highly toxic digital spaces run by billionaires to further their own self-interests. Personally I'd prefer if the Fediverse could be run as a separate, better alternative to such spaces.

@Gargron@mosseri ... no since they scare their users with scare page on option (last time I checked before they auto ban my account that never posted anything and blackmail the account to have ID).
Not really a win as nearly no famous people even enabled fediverse in the first place.
@Gargron Eugen, what steps are being taken to give Mastodon mainstream appeal? Are traditional DMs still a part of that plan? What is Mastodon doing to attain comparable mainstream appeal to Bluesky (where quite a few major news outlets are moving)? Any insight on this would be helpful.
For those who are concerned about harassment, stalking, and data harvesting threats from Threads ... if you're on an instance that doesn't block Threads, the risks just increased substantially.
And @Gargron@mosseri and everybody else who does see the connection with Threads as a good thing, please understand that some people are in fact at risk here. It would be great to. have official statements on this both from Mastodon and Threads for how people who do feel they're at risk can protect themselves. Until that happens, please share information from me or (if these links aren't to your taste) others.
