I'm so hyped for the @c3isdn deployment at congress, it will be such a fun thing to have around :3

@evey @c3isdn I've been dreaming about a proper SDH ring at some CCC event for several years; I have a few multiplexers up to STM64 here, and at least 10 STM-1 add-drop-mux for E1, plus 7 full-muxes (63xE1 to STM1). Others in the retronetworking community have equally large collections at home. I guess we need to work on developing more use cases beyond ISDN. c3gsm could back-haul E1 based BTSs; we could set up Frame Relay...

@c3isdn Like a SDH ring! Would have never thought there would be a *new* deployment of this lol

@LaF0rge @c3isdn Having if we could have some low speed ethernet to SDH we could even have a OOB network for NOC 🤣 But even just for distributing timing signals could be usefull right?

@LaF0rge @c3isdn If you just need some duplex pair running throughout the building with no length limitations this should be mostly not an issue tbh. There are tons of ah well we just put fiber between those rooms too kind of runs in the building that are at least for the network side of things not really used.

@LaF0rge @c3isdn But how the building fibers run having a big ring covering everything is actually doable and not too difficult even :D

@LaF0rge @evey @c3isdn biggest short-term communications museum ever:D (not to get me wrong, I like robust protocols and hardware, but I'm also glad we don't use it in production anymore)

@juela_the2nd @nicoduck @evey @c3isdn also always keep in mind there are smaller private telcos (city carriers) and also corporate internal networks (Deutsche Bahn, for example) who may have a completely different schedule for phasing out PDH/SDH than DTAG.

Me: „I’ve heard that there are still 2 of these devices in Germany. One is set up at your location and the second device is in the ‘Deutsches Museum’ in Munich. They don't call us a ‘technology museum with active operation’ for no reason“. 😁
And so it will soon be with SDH technology.

PDH technology has supposedly not been around for 20 years. About 10 years ago, I phoned a technician about a failed 2 Mbit connection somewhere in the Eifel, near the border with Belgium, where the fault was on a DSMX 2/34.
Technician: „I hope I can still get spare parts for the device somewhere.“ …

@jomo @c3isdn @sophie @evey makes me really sad to hear that; never been to either of those two events.

@c3isdn @sophie @evey GPN and MRMCD both had credit card terminals, which were used a lot.

CCC event ISDN/PSTN network (c3isdn@chaos.social)'s status on Thursday, 05-Dec-2024 20:00:39 JST CCC event ISDN/PSTN network
@sophie @evey our network is experimental, not for production purpose. Unrelated comment: I'd be very surprised if CCC events would ever consider deploying cashless payments unless there was a production quality source-available [auditable] system that does not give anyone the ability to track payments, equal to privacy of cash.

@evey Didn't they use the ISDN control channel to validate card transactions? What about deploying cashless payment via @c3isdn ?

@LaF0rge @juela_the2nd @evey @c3isdn yup, like us. We still have some SDH in operation, mostly lines for third parties.
