fun project idea: AMPS cellphone built out of modern day components
i would put the entire thing on an FPGA

@ftg @mossmann i've actually used osmocom-analog on NMT450 before, in a cheeky "nobody will notice if i do this for 20 minutes" way!
i don't think i can use the 450 MHz band in the UK any more than i can use the 800 MHz band sadly. but yes i like how non-fussy osmocom-analog is, and the code is very readable too. excellent work by, i think, @LaF0rge?
@whitequark @ftg @mossmann I was not involved in osmocom-analog. It's entirely the work of Andreas "jolly" Eversberg. And yes, it's amazing work. I've had the pleasure of witnessing it from it's very humble brginnings.
@whitequark cstone did AMPS in GNU Radio a while back https://github.com/unsynchronized/gr-amps
@mossmann @whitequark
And now there is also osmocom-analog, so the network side can also be done. With as little or as much SDR as desired.

It also supports the 450MHz NMT450 and MPT1327, so no need to try to find a quiet spot on 900MHz either.
@ftg @whitequark @mossmann jolly is sadly not on mastodon, not that I know of. His next amazing project is to operate a Siemens #EWSD Digital telephone exchange at #38c3 interconnected with @eventphone powering @c3isdn
@whitequark @mossmann @LaF0rge
I think it was by Jolly (sadly don't know their mastodon handle, if they have one). Excellent work in any case.
