The US government wants developers to stop using C and C++ https://www.theregister.com/2024/11/08/the_us_government_wants_developers/ by @sjvn

Yes, they're serious. They have good #programming #security reasons for doing this. But, it's not going to happen anytime soon.

@sjvn They could make it happen pretty soon by fixing liability laws. Not going to happen in a hurry and certainly less likely under the next lot.

@sjvn on a language-only level, it makes a lot of sense. You can do basically anything you need to with more protection against common vulnerabilities which have a real impact in the world.

What I feel it misses is everything else. Ecosystem, resources, developers, expertise, maturity, tooling, etc.

These things are getting better thankfully. Perhaps one day we'll be at a point where there's little reason to start a new project in C++. Existing ones will probably stick around for a while.

"They don't see the point. After all, they can write memory-safe code in C, so why can't you?"

      Hahaha 🤣 no they can't.

I work with people who are start programmers who have written C++ and C for 30+ years. And even they have write memory safe code. They would have to be a borrowchecker to be able to do that.

Of course people are reluctant to change their tooling; that means moving outside their comfort zone...

And in regards to speed: Rust is like 3% slower than C i believe?

@rasmus91 Speeds can vary wildly, but you knew that. Still, C is faster than Rust and for many developers and companies it's all about speed.
