@Razemix @markmalstrom @cheeaun I *think* that is so - but others who understand ATProto can verify…

@markmalstrom @cheeaun Interesting, thanks for the explanation. So using your own PDS, managing your data is easier/cheaper than on Mastodon, but it needs to be connected to the central AppView for others to see your content. (And running your own AppView would be expensive as it needs all data.) If BlueSky decided to ban your PDS from their AppView, you wouldn't lose your data, but you would be essentially screwed because most users (using the central AppView) couldn't reach you. Is that right?

@Razemix @cheeaun There currently is only one social media app backend (AppView) in operation for the AT Protocol that operates on `app.bsky.*` data. The AppView is open source and anyone can run their own if they wish. There are other AppViews being actively run that operate on different data schemas (similar to Pixelfed or PeerTube in the fediverse).

@Razemix @cheeaun depends on what you mean by "server.” The AT Protocol works differently than the Mastodon/ActivityPub. The Mastodon implementation of ActivityPub wraps up your identity, data storage, moderation, and social media app backend into one "server.”

@Razemix @cheeaun On AT, these are each separate entities (as well as another called a “relay” that works sort of like a web crawler). There are people running third party servers for identity, data storage, moderation, and relays. The official Bluesky client lets you choose a different data server (PDS) to use when you sign in if you want.

@cheeaun That all sounds really nice and dandy, except… is there actually any server other than bsky.social? Of course you won't have any friction when it's basically a centralized social network.

Retention was terrible when we tried Mastodon two years ago. Building Elk helped us stick longer, but most folks would drop quickly. This time is very different. Bluesky has no friction for devs. It is clicking for everyone. Enough of the community is here already. If we want it, we can make it work

Mastodon Bluesky It's not really about the technical side; it's about people and the community. Technical choices might affect whether an individual would move, but the community impacts greatly on whether they will stay. 1/n

i think it’s not that “choosing a server” is confusing to non-technical folks — it’s more that it does not have the same kind of consequences as on mastodon. on mastodon, choosing a server is like choosing where to build a house. on bluesky, choosing a server is like choosing an internet provider.
