@Razemix @cheeaun On AT, these are each separate entities (as well as another called a “relay” that works sort of like a web crawler). There are people running third party servers for identity, data storage, moderation, and relays. The official Bluesky client lets you choose a different data server (PDS) to use when you sign in if you want.

Mark Malstrom (markmalstrom@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 08-Nov-2024 12:50:17 JST Mark Malstrom @Razemix @cheeaun depends on what you mean by "server.” The AT Protocol works differently than the Mastodon/ActivityPub. The Mastodon implementation of ActivityPub wraps up your identity, data storage, moderation, and social media app backend into one "server.”

Mark Malstrom (markmalstrom@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 08-Nov-2024 12:50:16 JST Mark Malstrom @Razemix @cheeaun There currently is only one social media app backend (AppView) in operation for the AT Protocol that operates on `app.bsky.*` data. The AppView is open source and anyone can run their own if they wish. There are other AppViews being actively run that operate on different data schemas (similar to Pixelfed or PeerTube in the fediverse).
