Lazyweb, what's a decent cheap "IP camera" that'd work for pet nannycam use? Absolutely no cloud bs, some sort of simple direct streaming needed and ideally easy to integrate with HA if I ever wanted that. Looking for under-$50 price range.
@dalias Most of the random cheap IP security cameras on Amazon have H264 RTSP streams available.
They do usually have horrible firmware full of cloud BS and require some sketchy windows binary for initial provisioning, but you can set it up from a VM then note the URL of the stream, wipe the VM, and just access the raw stream with zoneminder or VLC or whatever.
Put it on a subnet with no outbound allowed and you're good to go.
@dalias I have three of the Amcrest 5MP UltraHD turret cameras, including one that PTZ. They have RTSP and PoE. I have them set up in HA (I use the web interface for the PTZ one, but there is an integration https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/amcrest/ ).
@dalias My experience, yes. I plugged them in, found their DHCP IP on my router, then connected to their web interface. There's also an app which, I believe, can locate them for you, but they showed up in my DHCP and the MAC identified as 'Amcrest Technologies" (or hunt MAC address starting with 09)'
@dalias We are former geeks intensely paranoid about privacy and we like reolink. Just works out of the box, no cloud, records to SD card, viewable live through an app, can motion/pet/person detect, good reputation in the security cam world. We are not yet using HA but googling indicates it is not hard to set up.
@lemay Thanks, this looks really promising. I saw them early in my results but was turned off by the "works with Alexa" 😂 and didn't look at details after that. The "provision via scanning QR" is brilliant UX for a camera.
@lemay Does the stream work on LAN with the internet blocked? Otherwise it's streaming through the provider's servers and virtually impossible to determine if that's e2ee to your viewing device or fully visible to them.
@dalias I guess it depends on your definition of “cloud." The camera does need an internet connection, and then you connect directly to it from the app for a live stream. But there's no video saved to cloud storage anywhere (you can do that with an add-on subscription but it's not required).
@dalias. Mostly via mobile app but I can connect an RTSP stream to things like Synology Surveillance Station recording setup or TV or other things*. If it's ever slow via mobile phone (happens v occasionally) I just switch on Tailscale on my phone (my router is an exit node) and it's as fast as if coming from cloud (I have a gigabit fibre connection).
