@SuperDicq tfw my desktop is silent enough (antec sonata ii case are neat) that sometimes I go sit at my desk and check the power led to see if it's still on
@SuperDicq That said one thing I wish is for low-power machines (even if it's low-perf, even a 2×1Ghz x86_64 CPU could be enough for my kind of server) but with decent I/Os.
The highway outside my apartment is louder than the computers inside.
I kinda miss all the '90s computer noises: whirring-and-clicking disk drives, screeching modems, crackling CRTs, and that cheerful beep when the computer turns on.
@SuperDicq@lanodan I'm a sucker for old enterprise kit.. Mostly rack servers. Got a saved search on ebay for local collection-only listings. Picked up way too much stuff for opening bid, often £5 or less. More than I need, which is why these two are still on the landing.. They were cheaper than buying the RAM inside alone for upgrading the ones in use..
@wolf480pl@SuperDicq Starting your own ISP really just makes you rely on a larger upstream ISP - although there is one less middleman that is a point of failure.
Modern signalling techniques makes the bandwidth your can get wirelessly quite acceptable when it comes to a single user.
Besides, even with satellites, if you want access to the existing Internet (as opposed to a new wide-area network for you and your friends) you need to interconnect with existing ISPs anyway.
Also, if you are your own ISP, you don't rely on a single upstream ISP. Being an ISP means having an ASN. That means you can interconnect with multiple ISPs redundantly and participate in BGP.
@wolf480pl An ISP is an internet service provider - even if you have a public ASN, if you're not providing internet service to anyone else but yourself, you're not an ISP.
stallman pays in cash, although he does have a credit card for things like planes that already identify him.
It's only if something insists he pay by card he cannot otherwise avoid that otherwise shouldn't identify him that he'll ask nicely for someone else to pay by card for him.
He specifically instructs his friends not to purchase things online and ship them to him.
It would not be selfish or obnoxious if you were to provide improved peering to your friends completely gratis.
Satellites and a meshnet sufficiently peered could replace the status quo.
@Suiseiseki also the "you connect to your friends and they commect to the internet" is like Stallman boycotting credit cards by asking his friends to pay by card for him.
It just adds intermediaries, and while it may make things easier for you, it just ouahes the burden onto those around you, and does not provide a solution that could scale and eventually replace the status quo.
@Suiseiseki btw @SuperDicq when you said it's easier to become an ISP, what definition of "ISP" did you use? - someone who provides internet to others - someone with an ASN - ...?
