     @nyanide the only change is that people have been leaving ever since the burst of new users in early 2021. this includes oldfags who couldn't handle poa.st becoming as big as it is, new instance operators getting fed up with pleroma, and newfags who got bored and left.

     @nyanide @jexams @bot twitter purged them out or made a major attempt to, and also loosened the rules on shitposting/rw posting that many of the "based" accounts went back to Twitter in an attempt at not solely preaching to the choir.
     
     Many of them went back to Twitter because there's a chance that you can sway the normiesphere to some degree (this was highly effective for a while between 2014-17).

     @nyanide @Inginsub the vibe was definitely different, I feel like it was "more fun", probably because there were a lot of new users that weren't humorlessly political. Most of dark fedi still federated with one another which can't be said now. Even tranny instances still federated with "dark fedi" and the shit-flinging was entertaining for it. A lot less gay janny shit going on back then.

     Fedi is the closest thing to old Twitter, but with different people and a lower chance of finding art on your TL. I can't go back to Twitter for one of the same reasons I lost interest in YouTube: the community aspect was killed.

     @jexams I mean if you remember at the time there wasn't really any popular alternatives for twitter that were well established.. except for popular competitor social medias like instagram (different tho) and mastodon

     @nyanide @jexams before mastodon there was an exodus of people from Twitter that left for various reasons. There were a few servers on the Fediverse barely hanging on and then maybe 12+ "edgy" servers took over the network. This was a year or so before Mastodon even showed up. Mastodon slowly brought in new users at first and in 2018 had a big migration of people and only a few years after that, the new people called the people already here for years "dark fedi" lol

     Seriously, the timeline of mastodon.social right now is an inverse of the kind of shit you find from poasties/NCD boomers. Two of these accounts joined in 2022-23, and one in 2020. So many of these politispergs are from the same time period.
     
     There's a lot of loser catladies/city slickers/human bots posting this kind of shit on the mastodon.social timeline with the "top posts". This ends up attracting more of the same kind of users and well, look how people see Mastodon: as another Bluesky.
