If I go to self check out I will freeze it up immediately demand help then I shit post on my phone while an employee scans it and rings me up. I just keep saying I don't understand how it works. Fuck them I am not assuming that liability of being accused over a mistake nor am I paid to try
@Humpleupagus@LM9 This is the second story I heard like this today as one of my wife's friends was arrested for shop lifting due to the self-scan also not registering a purchase properly.
Self scans time has come and gone. They're something for a highly capable, high trust society, neither of which we have now.
What happened to... "oh it must not have scanned properly, here's the money"? I mean... why the need to get the police involved. It seems like a matter that could be easily resolved through civility. If the customer refused to pay and tried to leave, then sure.... fuck em.
We've mostly have our groceries delivered since covid, so I do use self-check if and when I go to the store, because it's usually only one or two items.
I read the article. It's a bar code system that doesn't require that the item be flat against the reader. It sounds like it can even be read at a distance, so the theft would have to occur earlier than pretending to scan at the kiosk.
@Humpleupagus@stoner713@LM9@EvilSandmich circling back to the op they wont enforce this equally, and i bet you it'll be used to stop dissidents from purchasing items, at the very least its going to collect biometric data to sell and its going to record who buys what
wait for it, they'll start selling a lot of ammunition and everyone buying, even with cash, will be recorded, so the feds know roughly what calibers they're up against in what areas
mark my words
sometimes i use self checkout especially if its some nig'ed out place like walmart
@Humpleupagus@stoner713@LM9@EvilSandmich i wouldn't be shocked if it were some ai driven object identifying software but imo its more for the biometrics of people and selling that data
eventually i imagine data like your location could be sold off, maybe as intel to implicate you in some falsified crime
@Eiswald@stoner713@EvilSandmich@Humpleupagus@LM9 I can't even buy toothbrush heads at walmart anymore, they have them locked up behind glass cases, and I can never find anyone to unlock it. But hey, at least they don't have to pay people to work a register!
@stoner713@EvilSandmich@Humpleupagus@LM9 The irony of the self-checkout model was that they thought they would save money by getting rid of cashiers but ended up taking such high losses from theft that they've raised their prices to make up the difference.
When you're paying more at WalMart it's because you're paying for the thing that someone else took for free. So don't feel bad about stealing from them, someone else has already paid for it.
