@meso No, invidious is not pointless - it's useful for searching for videos without needing to execute proprietary JavaScript.
You can also use it to watch videos without google being able to tell that you're watching the video (as google doesn't get your IP address).
google was the party that destroyed the archival opportunities - it would be trivial for them to allow for archiving, but instead google intentionally sabotages the ability to archive as much as possible.
@Suiseiseki >google was the party that destroyed the archival opportunities - it would be trivial for them to allow for archiving, but instead google intentionally sabotages the ability to archive as much as possible. Invidious incited it by having a pointless proxy for YouTube. it is completely pointless given some instances don't even proxy the video to you and simply proxy the frontend
@vhns i don't get why you wouldn't hate on something that has simply incited google to put massive restrictions on downloading videos when it was completely fine before it existed. not even with a benefit of archiving the videos while watching them
@meso It's hardly pointless when it allows you to view the text below the video and copy any links from there without you having to run proprietary JavaScript.
It also shows comments, although I'd admit that's pointless, as there's only inane comments posted.
@meso >why you wouldn't hate on something that has simply incited google to put massive restrictions on downloading videos when it was completely fine before it existed. invidious instances are quite slow, so I don't think invidious's traffic was not the reason google put such "massive restriction" on downloading videos.
google has been restricting the ability to download videos from the very start of youtube, first via flash, next via a broken "JavaScript to get video stream" method.
google has recently decided to more actively attempt to sabotage the operation of yt-dlp and invidious (with invidious being easier to sabotage, as there's only a handful of /64's that are hosting invidious instances), as they don't like how such software gives the users freedom.
>not even with a benefit of archiving the videos while watching them You can download the stream while watching it if your browser doesn't restrict you.
Invidious is written in Crystal, a language no one has ever heard. Invidious had like on developer who picked that language and told every to just learn it if they wanted help. I see the situation has improved now, but lmao
@meso@smug@vhns I'm a rust enjoyer so there's not much use in Crystal for me atm, but it's Def top 3 of my "I don't use this, but you should list" (others are gleam(haskell but not cancerous) and Swift <3 )
