invidious instances are quite slow, so I don't think invidious's traffic was not the reason google put such "massive restriction" on downloading videos.
google has been restricting the ability to download videos from the very start of youtube, first via flash, next via a broken "JavaScript to get video stream" method.
google has recently decided to more actively attempt to sabotage the operation of yt-dlp and invidious (with invidious being easier to sabotage, as there's only a handful of /64's that are hosting invidious instances), as they don't like how such software gives the users freedom.

You can download the stream while watching it if your browser doesn't restrict you.
