I _do_ encourage people to use the #uspol hashtag or whatever regional flavor you might have, because that function isn't about censoring. It can be used by individuals to censor their own feed and that's fine with me, but it's also a great way to get more visibility on a topic. Interested parties use those to subscribe and interact.
People who insist others CW politics have all the tools they need to create their own filters. Politicians and political parties, and people at large, are named with proper nouns. It isn't difficult.
It's not that they're lazy either. They're being directly confrontational when they make this demand. So it's not laziness preventing them from helping themselves. It's not ignorance either because virtually every time it's some greasy white tech dude insisting on the CWs. They know how to filter.
I guarantee you no one online enough to make such demands is actually, truly triggered and put into mental distress against their will by you discussing politics without a CW. 100% promise. They might be annoyed, but it's quite a privilege to just suffer being annoyed in the face of fascism. I don't care if I'm annoying them.
And lemme say, if anyone thinks they're the exception here, that they truly are emotionally frail enough that everyone ought to censor the discussion of politics that they're affected by? Get offline. For your own good. Because you can't change the world.

So at this point I'm out of excuses for em. They're being disingenuous, every time. They don't argue this for their own sake. It's not about them, they don't care about it being hidden from themselves. They care about it being hidden from _other people_. They care about the topics being discussed at all.
Insisting people use CWs for politics is just censorship by guilt-tripping. Folks out there using CWs on politics: they're not doing anyone any favors. Might as well stand aside at the book burning because stopping them would be impolite.
That's why I don't CW or hashtag. What happens this November is about the global society in which you live. Look around you. If you live in any other country in the world, tell me how it's going for you.
I always (try to) use the #USpol and/or #Elections2024 hashtags, though, as they help me (and others) keep organized, e.g. to find an older post again.
Moreover, I do see use cases where you simply cannot take further bad news for a time, e.g. due to a family member being in hospital, etc., but cannot stay offline because you do need the "support group" of your Fedi network.
