   Republicans equate absolute iron fisted control over children's lives with protection because they are the party of bullies and abusers, and the primary concern of any bully/abuser is control over the targets of their violence.

   Control equals a greater opportunity to inflict suffering and harm.

   It was never really about protection.

   It was always about maintaining the potential to inflict violence.

     If you grow up with an authoritarian parent, you will know that their notion of protection and care of a child is bound in a sense of ownership of their children.

     If you do anything that threatens to weaken that sense of ownership, the authoritarian equates this with a threat to them and their property (i.e. their children).

     Protection of their property is the bottom line.

     And one does whatever one wants with property. Property doesn't have much of a say in the matter.

     I wasn't a human child when I was growing up.

     I was an object who was treated like an extension of my father's fragile male ego.

     You don't get to be who you are or who you want to be. You get to be what your parent insists on, and if you don't, abuse and suffering are the result.

     So, you try to be what they want you to be.

     I was his property.

     And I'm glad my owner died in 1989.
