     @givenup @grey The Pope was supposed to be Speaker of The House tier— first amongst equals with other bishops. For various reasons, most of Western Christendom aligned with the Pope and the original order was messed up. In some ways it's not so different from SOTH, in that the party generally aligns with him despite him only having one vote. Still sucks to see the most frustrating and insulting take come from liberation theology.

     @FourOh-LLC @grey Sorry for your parents. The church is the fellowship of believers, and,as an Eastern Catholic, I reject the idea that Rome is in charge of Christianity at large. Regardless, they're still the largest group of church of Christians, so bad doctrine from the head is a danger to those in the flock. It's also why more serious believers were moving to Latin mass, and exploring Eastern Catholic and Orthodox churches.

     I am "churchless". I grew up as a Roman Catholic altar-boy, seriously. I lived in a big old church - I rang the multi-tons bells in a tower with ticker ropes than my arms were at a time. I ran to rang them for noon, for church, during church, for funerals, for weddings. I play the organ while someone else pumped the air... I was to be a kick-ass priest.
     
     Then I lost my parents at age 13 and I was adopted by my father's sister. They were 7th Day Adventists, and I lived the life of a protestant with the same faithfulness as before.
     
     There is no Church. There is only Christ.

     @givenup @grey All the bishops used to have councils like where they drafted the Nicene creed back when Christianity was very young. Bishop basically means "priest or pastor in charge of a bunch of churches", usually like a country or territory. The Bishop of Rome is The Pope. Traditionally he was the guy who ran the meetings* but not the 'boss' like today.

What you might not know about Catholics is that the Church doctrine says leaving communion with Rome (e.g. becoming Protestant or Orthodox) is akin to leaving the faith. So if they're a cradle Catholic, they're going to wrestle really hard with that to the point where it might result in actual abandonment of Christianity.

     @Dan_Hulson @grey There's a handful of things from Vatican 2 that I like. They stopped calling all Protestants heretics because of it, and they gave the Eastern Catholic Churches more autonomy and stopped trying to Romanize them. Not sure if the juice is worth the squeeze on that one.
