翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Thursday, 15-Aug-2024 18:36:46 JST 翠星石 @iwillbite The reason why a death penalty shouldn't be implemented is because there have been many cases of innocent people getting convicted and executed and then found to be innocent.
If I remember correctly, one study extrapolated cases of executed inmates found to be innocent via DNA evidence and estimated that up to ⅓ of inmates on death row are likely to be innocent.
Despite how a life sentence without parole pretty similar to a death sentence, at least those found to be innocent can be released.
A legitimate justice system is not focused on "giving criminals what they deserve" - it's rather focused on preventing a recurrence of behavior that has lead to harm in other people - although some people can only be adequately stopped from harming others with a life sentence, that is not the vast majority of people. -

i know this is callous of me, but a crime can't reoccur if the criminal is dead.
You do have a very strong point on the number of potentially innocent people in prison, however.

翠星石 (suiseiseki@freesoftwareextremist.com)'s status on Friday, 16-Aug-2024 19:31:19 JST 翠星石 @neo Last time I checked, in the USA, actually executing an individual costs a fortune, comparable to jailing them for life.
The USA has costs all figured out, by making the inmates perform slave labor, with the prison taking most of what the business pays for the slave and then giving them a very small wage (if you work long hours, you can buy noodles!) - any profits go towards the jailing expenses. -
