I mean I have read things by people like Ayn Rand or Rothbard. I completely disagree with them though. Also I love reading about history, well more so like 19th century to modern than medieval period and such tho.

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 22:50:05 JST Sick Sun @smithy @dushman @arcana Objectivism isn't great but I think her concept of enlightened self-interest is valuable. Also she is right that most of society's promotion of altruism is actually meant to transfer wealth and control to other people. -

Sick Sun (sun@shitposter.world)'s status on Sunday, 11-Aug-2024 22:54:19 JST Sick Sun @dushman @arcana @smithy Rand's self interest still didn't allow you to harm other people, this is something that both her proponents and opponents seem to understand. She had a well defined concept of self interest not just colloquial selfishness. -

I mean I believe everyone is ultimately driven by self interest but not in the same framework. I'm a big fan of Stirner lol. -

Nicholas Conrad (nicholas@aklp.club)'s status on Monday, 12-Aug-2024 00:19:27 JST Nicholas Conrad they admire her but they don't live what she said in her books
She fled the soviet revolution when her family was literally being hunted for being business owners, she became not only a preeminent novelist (writing in a second language at that) at a time when it was structurally difficult for women to do so generally, but she also became one of the world's most famous public intellectuals of her time. A true O.G. girlboss without any of the identitarianism. There's a lot to admire there.
But objectivism is pretty wack-a-doodle tbh.

djsumdog (djsumdog@djsumdog.com)'s status on Monday, 12-Aug-2024 00:19:27 JST djsumdog I've only read The Fountainhead. The descriptions, settings and her use of words are really beautiful ... but the characters are all the same in the sense they're all psycho.
I get what she was saying in the book, but using the architect analogy just doesn't seem to work. Being unwavering in your vision doesn't really work for things like a building that requires buy-in from all the people investing in it, with their own needs and use cases. -

FourOh-LLC (fouroh-llc@pkteerium.xyz)'s status on Monday, 12-Aug-2024 05:41:06 JST FourOh-LLC Every time you read someone bitching about capitalism, unless they are indoctrinated revolutionaries, the bitching is really about human tendencies.
Its the fundamental human tendency that rots every and all system, including "religion" or "charity". As the saying goes, we cannot design a civilization, the best we can hope for is to survive it.
Painting with the wide brush of "capitalism is bad" is an attitude more dangerous that capitalism itself. The reason being that its certain you have nothing better to replace it with, so the opportunists and the criminals going to hijack your half-baked ideology.
