Does anyone following me know of a way to rip DVD subtitles with position information? From some quick searching, most tools do not have this information.

  I've got a DVD I want to turn into ANSI art (Unicode block drawing plus terminal color codes) with subtitles, and putting stuff in the right place would be nice.

  @manawyrm @brouhaha @gsuberland Yeah, some DVDs have closed captions as well as subtitles. I'm not sure about this particular one. OCR should be easy enough. I just don't want to have to make my own tooling.

  @brouhaha @gsuberland @ryanc Was pretty common over here in EU, though, most DVD players would output closed captioning in the vertical blank as a teletext signal... So at least some info should be there.

  @ryanc I'm not sure how they're ripping the subtitles out of DVDs because they're usually PAC, which is essentially just a series of timed transparent bitmap images.

  @alzimon OCR would be more reliable, as the subtitle images alone can be extracted separately, and also I very specifically want position data.

  @ryanc I don't know much about such tools, but if you're stuck, depending on language, audio quality, number of speakers, etc. it may be a real option to auto-generate new subtitles using whisper.cpp (free!). That produces timestamped subtitle files and has generally excellent quality.

  @ryanc @manawyrm @gsuberland AFAIK, the closed captioning on line 21 is encoded in the video, rather than being in the DVD metadata. At least, I don't recall seeing any metadata support for it in the DVD 1.0 spec, back when I had access to that.

  @r3pek @InvertedLina I've seen DVDs that do fancy stuff with "subtitles" like positioning and graphics.
  In particular, I remember the US DVDs of Excel Saga using this extensively to add notes to explain cultural references and provide translations of text on the screen.

  @ryanc AFAIK, the timing information is there, as for position, I don't think so (never saw a DVD that placed subtitles on the top for example). It just defaults to bottom center 😉

  @ryanc I'm not sure if it automatically does the location, but I think Subtitle Edit is the main open source tool for that. If you haven't tried it already, it's probably worth a look. https://nikse.dk/subtitleedit
