I know you didn't ask me... and I hope others will still answer ... but for a lot of people I've talked to a big factor is simply not having a critical mass of "their people" here... which is a kind of circular problem. There are some interests and posting styles that are very lively here but others that are dead... eg. posting about live sports games as they happen.

Silver Huskey (silver_huskey@fandom.ink)'s status on Sunday, 04-Aug-2024 23:55:43 JST Silver Huskey @orangelantern @futurebird @chu Pretty much what Futurebird said. Also, a lot of people found the technical aspects too difficult, no matter how many times or different ways it was explained. They even made accounts here, but quickly abandoned them.
Others didn't like the culture here at all, and if they didn't go back to Twitter, they just settled on Bluesky.
Some still get their livelihood from Twitter and actively resent being there each day. They ignore me if I mention the Fediverse.

Orange Lantern (orangelantern@froggie.gay)'s status on Sunday, 04-Aug-2024 23:55:44 JST Orange Lantern @futurebird@sauropods.win @chu@climatejustice.social @silver_huskey@fandom.ink I have a similiar problem with my rl friends (with the exception of 1 none of them are here).
My counter-argument is that if someone starts to move, others will follow (not me, obvs, ppl never follow where I go, but that's another point). The more just do it, the more will do so too, just to remain part of the herd.
It's the same with all things, really. Politics too. You have to get one person who is well connected to make the switch. Usually others will follow then.
Another thing, that is much harder to dispel, is the argument of convenience. People actually like the algorithm. It shows them what they might like (should like), suggests contacts from their bubble, highlights posts from friends automatically and so on, without any effort on their part.
Fedi only works if you put effort into it. If you engage with other people. It's true social media. Many people don't want this. Like, at all. They want a curated selecion of bits of social media presented on a silver platter, without any need to do anything. They have a similiar expectation towards it like people used to have towards TV. The digital fire you can stare into after a day, not a lively fire spirit who wants to chat with you. -

Silver Huskey (silver_huskey@fandom.ink)'s status on Sunday, 04-Aug-2024 23:59:26 JST Silver Huskey @orangelantern @futurebird @chu I will say that a few friends stuck with it and are here. They didn't abandon Twitter, but locked their accounts and just keep in touch with friends.
I do realize that if we want the Fediverse to be more active, we have to put the work in. I hate algorithms, so I'm enjoying myself here for the most part. I've just given up on getting people here, unless they're interested.
These same conversations happen on Bluesky about people still being on Twitter. 😅
