     2. Yes, doubting lived experience of Black, Indigenous, Asian, Arab, etc. people is itself racist.

     Just don't.

     And yes, asking for proof is doubting that lived experience. If you think you are the first white person descending on a thread to "just ask questions" – you are wrong.

     Instead, go read the threads I link in the next toot, and follow their authors. Then go read through their other threads. There is plenty of receipts and proof, and most importantly context and explanations, in there.

     This is whataboutism. We're talking about racism here, not whatever that person wants to talk about.

     Worse, it's *weaponized* whataboutism – aimed at derailing a conversation about racism, and smearing a specific person who is vocal on the issue.

     That's an insta-block from me.

     Yes, you will continue to feel uncomfortable around the topic of racism.
     Yes, you will continue to have to learn and improve on the anti-racism front.
     Yes, you will continue to make mistakes. I probably did in this thread!

     If you think that sucks, imagine being on the other side of everything you've learned from the video, the podcast series, and the threads I linked.

     As a friend once enlightened me: anti-racism is not about making white people comfortable.

     @rysiek coming from an still overwhelmingly Catholic country, I see a big part of raising kids in teaching them to trust their own mental abilities. I see a lot of religious upbringing centered around inculcating shame around asking _some_ questions you're not supposed to ask even yourself, and doubting _some_ things you're not supposed to doubt. The whole “sinned in thought” idea.

     I understand you're talking about some specific context of interjecting someone else's conversation to challenge them, when it's none of your business. Fine.

     But if you find yourself doubting stuff, you just are, that's just your mind at work. You might be wrong or inconsistent, and there's always room to improve your thinking.

     But I won't ever be teaching my kids any version of “doubting is bad”.

     @rcz @rysiek Huuuge difference between doubting your own conclusions and impressions or weighing evidence, and telling someone to their face that you don't believe they're sincere and honest because they have an experience different from yours.

     @rysiek the fundamental architecture of the fediverse makes many types of expected moderation extremely hard or even impossible. any attempt to try to transmit this fact to these people is rejected by them as 'splaining or saying racism is acceptable. Well it's not, it's about education and managing people's expectations. things could be a lot better but this network is simply never going to meet expectations of people in many of these outrage threads. The inescapable fact is that they would be only be happier on different social networks than this one.

     Yes.
     
     The Fediverse simply isn't capable of meeting moderation expectations of many reasonable people, not in practice today, and not even in theory.
     
     Attention should migrate to something new, with moderation as the top design concern. The Fediverse DOES NOT SERVE groups that are targets of extreme harassment.

     @sun @rysiek Fedi cannot be exactly what people want, but it also hasn't implemented a couple of things that are with technical theory and practice. Let's at least do those. And let's keep educating each other on the social bit.

     For those who still aren't served by that improved network, yes, let's hope they find somewhere to be too. Perhaps it could be a semi-federated corner of almost-Fedi.

     @sun @rysiek if i've learned one thing from the fediverse, it's that it doesn't much matter who you are -- you can be the target of that kind of harassment if you reveal yourself to be a member of an identifiable group.
