this is very much like the whole "failure to do every day maintenance" stuff. Phonetics works. But teaching the same thing can be a DRAG, and experimenting ( we're trying!!!!! ) is much more fun.

@deprecated_ii I'm sure that is at least the genesis of this.

@sickburnbro how much of this is because you're supposed to "contribute to the field" when you get a PhD so people have to come up with wacky shit that hasn't been done before

This happens in yuge, very prestigious companies too. Generic MBAs who don't understand the given industry and only "manage business" are a fucking cancer.

@deprecated_ii @sickburnbro My favorite part about Government work is when someone well above my heads wants to justify their paycheck and decides to do it by reinventing the wheel on a program that already works. Change the name, marginally change it enough that we all get head aches down in the weeds of it all, and then they parade around as if they've saved the entire fucking planet.

@sickburnbro Maybe its because every second word in english has its own special way of pronouncing it?
And kids learning english deserve to suffer.

@Marakus it's not "every second word". English is basically a combination of French and German in a few layers. This means that many non-loan words retain different rules. Just learn to see the german words from the french ones.
