Man, you gotta love the attitude of GNOME devs and the whole culture of Linux sometimes, really…

So on Fedora, which ships with Firefox (without codecs so can’t play videos), you can’t delete text with the on-screen keyboard because the backspace key is broken (also in some other apps).

So about that new Linux tablet you got…

Anyway, here’s a video of the bug in this issue from 1 year ago:
    https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-shell/-/issues/6340

    But here’s the best bit:

Commenter: Can you prioritize this pls?
    Dev: No.

    🤦♂️

PS. @starlabssystems, this affects GNOME in general so any distribution you ship with a recent (Wayland) GNOME will have this problem. I’m not sure if it’s worth you guys having a look at this as something you might be able to contribute a fix for upstream to help improve the StarLite tablet experience for folks who use GNOME.

@jeff I did try it out on the tablet but it has its own issues (like not showing tab, etc., on the on-screen keyboard for Kosnole). But, on the whole, I was very impressed by how far they’ve come since I’d last had a look (which was, admittedly, a long time ago).

@DJDarren Yeah. What gets me is that some folks do get that… and there’ been so much progress. It’s just shit like this that really gets to me. Not the bugs. Everything has bugs. The attitude. (And don’t get me started on the institutionalised ableism and the circling of the wagons and ad-hominem attacks towards anyone who criticises it.)

@aral Shit like this is the real reason that Linux has never hit the mainstream the way the users keep complaining it should have.

macOS is popular because Apple (try to) make sure that everything is polished. Linux needs an official distro that’s obsessively well put together that all the others can hang off of. And yeah, I get how that kinda goes against the FOSS ethos.

I thought perhaps you had paraphrased, so I had a look.

You're right. The dev said "no".

      What an ugly attitude.

Even if this doesn't effect me directly, I'm not going to recommend GNOME to anyone, because this attitude is not something I want to inflict on anyone else, nor reward it.

@MichaelTBacon @starlabssystems That’s the thing, though, the experience in general is actually really nice. Until you have to… y’know… edit text.

They’ve made so much progress in having a unified, responsive interface.

But again, the screen reader is broken.

I mean, it’s just infuriating because it’s so close and yet so far.

Wow yeah that is like peak GNOME attitude right there.

Also as I've said before GNOME is a terrible pick for a tablet. Because of the hardware limitations, a tablet absolutely has to have a coherent user interface, and GNOME is a lot of things, but its very design principles from the beginning have been almost decidedly anti-coherency.

I would have considered putting some dev cash into getting Elementary to work on tablets. But what do I know. . .

@jeff @aral To be fair KDE has a lot of stupid bugs too. Like the new one from 6.1 that makes the text-only sensor widgets in the taskbar half as big compared to the bar size.

@aral@mastodon.ar.al kde always has fixes in the pipelines unlike gettin gnome'd and having bugs fester as devs operate in denial.
