@dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler bushings are actually a critical component, and you can't slap just any ol piece of rubber in many components.
They are often used to keep tolerances in machines at very specific places.

@sickburnbro @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl they’re expensive because it’s an FAA certified part

@TeaTootler @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl they're expensive most likely because they're part of a contract with a supplier that makes the part specifically to AF specifications and plays all their specific documentation and contract games.
I have talked to people that run firms that do machined parts for the military and they've specifically said part of their advantage is that they have experience in doing all the dumb military paperwork.

@sickburnbro @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler >order 700 custom dimension bushings with a 0.00005" tolerance as a priority order that needs shipped in 24 hours
Yea, that's gonna be expensive, blame the DoD for being retarded.

@ForbiddenDreamer @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler if you're running a 50 year old airframe .. that's sometimes what happens.

@ForbiddenDreamer @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler for sure, but what I said initially is the primary thing. This stinks of the standard GOP "look at all this w-w-WASTE in the government" drama thing they always pull. Given that the government is dropping a trillion a quarter on invaders, I have 0 patience for it.

@sickburnbro @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler The custom part, sure. Not being able to maintain inventory for routine maintenance though?

@NoDoxGregBrady @ForbiddenDreamer @sickburnbro @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler We joke about this, but that’s not far from the truth.

@NitroDubs @NoDoxGregBrady @ForbiddenDreamer @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler there are definitely people that want to do that, yes.

@ForbiddenDreamer @sickburnbro @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler During “sequestration“ a few years ago the Air Force was cannibalizing parts off of museum aircraft.
So yes, they struggle with routine maintenance.

@sickburnbro @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler They're still just cylinders cut out from a metal slab. You can buy an entire wire EDM machine with that money. Between the metal, the wire, and the machine, I don't see where the cost is coming from, or what are they made of, rhodium?

@dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler who knows. There are Oilite bushings which are pretty cool, not as expensive as rhodium, but again, military specs for things can often times be pretty extreme.

@NitroDubs @ForbiddenDreamer @sickburnbro @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler I don't even think it's a joke. I've heard that argument made.
"If we have one airframe, we can save money on maintenance because they will all use the same parts."

@NoDoxGregBrady @ForbiddenDreamer @sickburnbro @dubbub @teknomunk @TrevorGoodchild @DW2 @KarlDahl @TeaTootler That’s how it will start, and then each specialized variant gets farther and farther away from the base airframe. Eventually you end up with a Hornet into Super Hornet situation where almost nothing interchanges.
