@Tony@clew.lol he's a shithead and a con artist. He did a hostile takeover of tesla and pretends to be the founder, now he's running it into the ground. Several of his other projects are outright scams (solar roofs, run by his brother or cousin iirc, boring company, a total joke)

      > a con artist

You mean like every capitalist who has amassed huge sums of money ever?

      > pretends to be the founder

You mean like every other billionaire who leveraged his wealth to buy out companies (Berkshire Hathaways business model is based on this)

      > running it into the ground

You mean the first auto maker to capture the electric market?

      > Outright scams

I've seen some of the solar roof installs and they are higher quality and objectively better than "solar pannels" which are a scam too.

And the boring comparing makes me lol.

I understand why people don't like rich people and that's fine, but his brand "elon musk" really is changing the public landscape and his companies are innovating and creating technology that even the US government can't do by itself. You may not like him because he's rich, but for bettter or for worse he's shaping a lot of industries in the US.

in the US trains are a horrible idea for transportation. The cost of construction is MASSIVE and unsustainable in most towns/cities.

I don't own a tesla and i wouldn't buy one. But I don't hate elon for making them. It's not his fault people love fads.

@Tony @anemone I've literally never used the corposcum platform. They didn't like me trying to register over Tor.

I probably should have qualified "no one *sane* buys them".

The average person you asked here? Gasoline cars are fine, Tesla is way too overpriced to be worth buying. That opinion has only gotten /worse/ now that the cost of battery replacement is infamous (all electric cars fail hard at that).

So much for that capture when no one bought them here and no one buys them anywhere now because they're widely recognized as overpriced garbage.

@Tony @anemone It did in fact mitigate /some/ of the bullshit they were doing.

Of course letting them /remain/ oligarch scum was still a mistake.

In any case, given how fond the feds are of throwing words like "national security" around, maybe they should in this case. Sure, they probably can't come after the company directly, but it's all but certain that there /is/ stuff to be found on most of the owners if they bother to dig at all.

Actually, anti trust laws made the railroad barons into actual barons. When they broke up the companies, they created shares and gave majority shares to the founders.

So they had even more money. It literally didn't accomplish it's goal and was a scam to begin with.

But yes, the railroads do what they want lol.

@Tony @anemone Yeah that's another thing your country need to do since it failed to do it back when it should've been done a little more than half a century ago.

The whole antitrust thing /started/ as a slapping around railway companies getting uppity. The slapping around railway corposcum with a clue bat should resume.

If they act to destabilize or compromise national security by hindering the construction or operation of its infrastructure (or, heavens forbid, taking its infrastructure hostage as "private" property)... well, there are a large number of laws in your books for that.

i know they can get big. But even if you are right, people aren't going to change. A city near me is trying to build a train and they got to close to a railroad companies railroad and the project hasn't moved in like 3 years and lost like 100 million dollars.

@Tony @anemone You'd be surprised at how big apartments can get if you want to build them that way.

In places where that's not the norm those tend to be overpriced, but if you don't really /have/ a norm or are actively changing it, then it doesn't have to be that way.

You may be correct, but as a nation we can't just cHaNgE uRbAnSpRaWl.

You don't realize the sheer amount of fucking homes that get built here lol.

There are 100s of millions of people living in the suburbs.

This isn't Europe - we don't all live in boxes stacked on top of each other. Our kitchens and laundry rooms are in their own rooms.

@Tony @anemone Most towns/cities in USA are currently built in a massively sprawled and unsustainable way (at least from what I've seen of both pictures, videos, satellite imagery and maps).

Part of fixing that will involve abandoning those that are lost causes.

The cost of construction is also fairly minimal compared to the maintenance of the sheer infrastructural sprawl otherwise engendered.
