    @HauntedOwlbear @benjojo why would that be, what's your theory? Why do you?

    I'd associate fedi with politically & tech savvy, anti establishment, maybe woke or libertarian, and, sure, like being 30+. Maybe there's a bit of a traditionalist vibe, that's your thinking?

    But personally I associate CDs & DVDs with the ramping up of copyright enforcement & the start of DRM controls, and I just couldn't wait to be rid of them. If I wanted to be retro I'd use vinyls or tapes.

      @nottrobin @benjojo I do a lot of work in software preservation, hence my very regular interaction with the media.

      Perhaps because of this, I know a disproportionately large number of physical media users here.

      Physical disc formats are things you can easily own, rip and re-rip. CDs are higher quality than most streams, as well as being a nice physical artefact.

      No one can take away your DVDs or Blu-rays away once you've bought them (although you may need to spend some time wrangling MakeMKV to actually rip the latter).

      Second hand disc media are amazing value.

      And retro nostalgia tends to be generational. LPs were an old school format when I was getting into music, although I had a small collection - I still buy records. But CDs are what I visualise if someone asks me to imagine an album.

      Same with software. I got into games towards the beginning of the CD-ROM era, and I don't doubt that my own interest in preserving this era stems from that.

      I might be wrong, but I think more people on Fedi are interested in owning, rather than renting, their media, plus our demographics seem to skew towards people who grew up in the CD era.

      @HauntedOwlbear @benjojo

      I'm fascinated that you'd choose optical discs when you're into preservation, given how famously vulnerable they are to scratches. What's your thinking here?

      To me, the ability to own your data has nothing to do with which type of disc you store it on. That's purely about whether you buy or download DRM-free files. You can obviously "own" a great many more things on a 5TB NAS in your living room than you can on CDs. No-one can take that away either.

      I hate to break into something long here, but I mean that work in preservation in that make digital copies of physical media, and create methods by which people can continue using their physical media.

      I'd also like to emphasise that I'm really not looking for either an argument, or an extended debate on the subject.

      I'm sure you have your own excellent reasons for your preferred data preservation practices, but I genuinely do not have the spoons to discuss them with you today, apologies.

      @nottrobin

      It's not my survey - this effort belongs to @benjojo - I was only commenting speculatively.

      But do have a lovely evening. I would usually be very up for going through the ins and outs of all this (I mostly agree with you, but for the issue of obtaining media works in the first place), but today is not great for being a queer immigrant where I am, so everything feels a bit much. gestures to French elections

      @HauntedOwlbear @benjojo

      Yes that's totally fair.

      I didn't mean to reject your point of view, I just wanted to understand it. I've heard people make these points about CDs before, and they always confuse me.

      But of course I understand if you'd rather not discuss it with me.

      I'm still curious about the results of your survey though 😊. Thanks for your work.

      By all means, although I warn you that my account is extremely random!

      But I'd be more than happy to continue the media convo when I'm less angsty - broadly, torrents and NZB indexs are fine until you need something actually rare in a lossless format.

      And thanks.

      Oh yeah sorry for the mistake.

      Oh dear that sounds awful. I'm really sorry.

      You could well be right about obtaining the media. Or certainly if you care about obeying the law 😉.

      Do take care of yourself. I hope everything works out.

      I don't know anywhere near as much about the situation in France as I should, but I'd heard it sucks. Mind if I follow you? It would be interesting to read your perspective.
