@nottrobin @benjojo I do a lot of work in software preservation, hence my very regular interaction with the media.
Perhaps because of this, I know a disproportionately large number of physical media users here.
Physical disc formats are things you can easily own, rip and re-rip. CDs are higher quality than most streams, as well as being a nice physical artefact.
No one can take away your DVDs or Blu-rays away once you've bought them (although you may need to spend some time wrangling MakeMKV to actually rip the latter).
Second hand disc media are amazing value.
And retro nostalgia tends to be generational. LPs were an old school format when I was getting into music, although I had a small collection - I still buy records. But CDs are what I visualise if someone asks me to imagine an album.
Same with software. I got into games towards the beginning of the CD-ROM era, and I don't doubt that my own interest in preserving this era stems from that.
I might be wrong, but I think more people on Fedi are interested in owning, rather than renting, their media, plus our demographics seem to skew towards people who grew up in the CD era.
