iirc re-encoding videos isn't cheap.

@sun @sickburnbro would that mean youtube is editorializing user generated content? that would mean they aren't protected by section 230 anymore

@graf @sickburnbro worth a try

@sun @graf that's what they currently do, which is how the blockers work.

@sickburnbro @graf it just pauses the playlist but I get your point, it would be equally easy to detect and prevent if what I said was true. I guess we'll see

@sickburnbro nobody on this planet including you or me is prepared for a world where google is defunct as much as you or i want it

@graf @sickburnbro they probably store the video as segments so I assume they can inject the ad between segments without re-encoding.

@graf for sure, a lot of companies rely on them. But I don't think they're as critical as some fear.
Sure maybe browsers might not be updated every 10 seconds, but I'm not sure most people would notice.

@graf @sickburnbro @sun I would call the content moderation policies of all the major social media sites well past the line of editorialization at this point.

@Noraweed @sickburnbro @sun removing content isn't within the scope. if they edited it to remove a nigger word or something, thats another story. which is more or less what they are doing if they are reencoding user videos with hardcoded ad segments

@graf @Noraweed @sun right, what they do now is just don't let you poast it at all. What's interesting is they already seem to track the areas people repeat the most

@graf @Noraweed @sun I do think there is a lot of evidence showing these companies do have feeds to keep people scrolling for longer, and I think people are worried about it.

@sickburnbro @graf @Noraweed how are they going to enforce this? When a couple states wanted to have a way to block minor access to pornography, democrats said that was impossible because it would be a violation of privacy to have a way to detect someone's age

@graf @sickburnbro @sun I guess the better way to put it is they are acting as publishers rather than platforms then. So far they haven't been going in an directly removing the nigger words but forcing you to do it yourself before posting. Since their doing this well beyond the bounds of keeping illegal content off the site they are making active editorial decisions in what is being published. Thus, editorializing.
This change to active insert ads within pieces of media uploaded by users is just the next step. The next step is changing you posts after you've made them without your consent (see also, reddit admins)

@graf @sickburnbro @Noraweed we could outlaw scummy media practices too, China does it. It's not good for anyone.

@sun @sickburnbro @Noraweed if you want my opinion on that, pornography should just be outlawed tbh

@noyoushutthefuckupdad @graf @Noraweed @sickburnbro if you want to seriously dent pornography without becoming a totalitarian state, just have the government decide not to copyright it. It will still exist but it won't be a multi billion dollar industry anymore

@graf @sickburnbro @Noraweed @sun >outlaw porn
are you sure you're the admin of poast?

@noyoushutthefuckupdad @sun @graf @Noraweed there are a lot of things you could do, and we will do none of them because the entire incentive structure is set up to resist them all.

@sun @Noraweed @graf @sickburnbro if you wanted to discourage porn use, you could make the dating scene and family courts a little less horrible

@sickburnbro @graf @Noraweed @noyoushutthefuckupdad I don't actually care about porn but it's interesting to think about ways society can address problems if it was only concerned with efficacy not pleasing various groups

@sun @graf @Noraweed @noyoushutthefuckupdad we are pretty much at maximum female privilege right now, so it will be interesting to see where things go.

@colahpse @sun @graf @Noraweed maybe, I mean they already have kid modes for most software now anyway. The tricky part is just what qualifies as a "bad" mode for the social media.

They say they'll enforce with fines, of course. Which is silly considering Big Tech will just throw more money into challenging it in court before it actually goes into effect.

@brokeassredneck @graf well, like how all those car dealerships are SOL right now because they all run on one company. That company probably runs on either google or amazon.
