I know there's still a big contingent of people who believe that, at its core, the United States can be a force for good.

And I want to remind you that it's never been the case for those who don't fit the image or ideology of the core of America: colonial Europeanized identities (or an alliance to it), wealth (by means of forced capital extraction) and imperial moves (like having thousands of bases around the world and being the largest contributor to child slavery around the globe).

This is the type of shit that a state government aligned to those values and its acolytes sign off on.

@jalcine A horrific follow-up to US agents using a vaccination program as a cover for finding bin Laden in Pakistan :( https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2014/05/20/314231260/cia-says-it-will-no-longer-use-vaccine-programs-as-cover

@cstross @jalcine Pretty sure in my case it's just dictatorship paranoia. At least the US pretends a little (for now). A matter of the lesser evil. There simply is no other nuclear power to stand against dictatorships, yet. Even India is veering awfully near dictatorship and even worse into greedy capitalism than the US.

@jalcine It's ethno-nationalist racist resentment, and to those of us who were around and watching tech in the 1980s it's deja vu all over again, except back then it was anti-Japanese paranoia.

Luckily back then Japan was broadly aligned with the west so it was more like a bad-tempered family feud than something that could bleed over into war. Or this kind of lethally toxic hostile propaganda.

In tech, there's a lot of anti-Chinese sentiment (Have you seen John Gruber's posts on the topic?) without the acknowledgement that without China, none of the devices we have here would be built. Without the global South for that matter. It's an inherently xenophobic (and nationalistic) stance that encourages states to organize themselves to INCREASE the chances of AAPI communities being harmed by disease (especially when the governments have been weakened by the states under which corporations are chartered - every company works indirectly as a branch of economic military).

      It's sad.
