like i said, basically the entire network is free software (minus a few centralized services that a lot of instances block anyway), and it’s really fucking weird that a new project from an established developer is starting out as closed source

Dansup, or any other dev, owes us absolutely nothing and especially not when they’re producing work for free (not even paid with ads or personal data). They should be free to work however they want. If you’re not comfortable with how a project is being handled you can either choose not to engage with it or get busy coding your own take with your standards.
