@hazlin there is no lack of honest people who like working with their hands. the workforce that exists didn't materialize from thin air, it was built with on the job training that nobody does anymore, and paid a lot better relative to cost of living when the existing old fart workforce originally joined up

now they expect you to spend several years and a big pile of money before they'll even talk to you, and starting pay is 2/3 what you need to live in poverty. of course hardly anyone wants to do it

@deprecated_ii skilled labor, especially for physically intensive jobs, there is more demand than there is supply. Even if you are willing to pay them well. (the business I have association with, after covid, was having to pay them like they were engineers with years of relevant experience xD)

It got even worse after covid. I think the vax culled a lot of people in a critical age range.

I'll add the qualification that, a majority of the available people will either steal from you, or will do such a poor quality job that it creates more work for your company. (also had a few that, just didn't want to work, they do just enough so it is hard to tell, but they are doing fucking nothing if no one is watching).

I talked about this with dad.
When he got to school, he was given free education, housing, and a promise of a future job, in exchange for a contract, that he WILL be working there for several years.

Meanwhile, these days, it's a lottery of "guess what job will be in demand 8 years from now :D"

@pepsi_man @LukeAlmighty @deprecated_ii @hazlin my uncle just retired and his employer was bending over backwards to get him to stay. same story with my father in law couple years ago. the problem is there is nobody to replace the experience of the 30+ year types, companies either don't do a good job training people for it, or they don't do a good job retaining talent once they've developed it.

There needs to be a forced retirement age. If you've been working the same job for 30 years, it's time to go because at that point, you've long since reached marginal returns and are only holding up the line.

I can tell you how many boomers I've worked with who brag that they can "retire right now" but they never do and it blows my mind they don't have something else they'd rather be doing with their time. I can't wait to permanently drop out of the system and truly be free, and I haven't even hit 40.

@pepsi_man @monsterislandcolonizer @LukeAlmighty @EssentialUtinsil @deprecated_ii @hazlin Facts. I only stay at my current company because I'm unsupervised and they never make me do any work. If I moved, yeah sure I'd get a 20-30% raise, but I'd also have to do 90-100% more work.

That's a hard lesson I just recently learned. There's only punishment for company loyalty, i.e. low or no raises followed by layoffs.

      Basically, Forbes got it right:

@WoodshopHandman @yockeypuck @PeterPower @deprecated_ii @hazlin Young people control a sliver of the overall wealth in the country. For most of them and us there is no option to make big expenditures. It has to come from those with the vast majority of the wealth down. the younger people have to compete with a government that hates them, a job market with very few realistic aspects, and immigrants who are always willing to take a dollar less an hour. So 3 roommates in a $1,500 a month two bedroom apartment do not have any extra income to spend. But the 70-year-old that's got 6 million in the bank and doesn't really owe anything could. But they don't want to . Because it's their money LOL and all this other shit

@WoodshopHandman @yockeypuck @deprecated_ii @hazlin A friend of mine owns a construction company and literally advertises work by Americans for americans. As to hint that he doesn't hire mexicans. He crushes all the local competition. But only in the lower middle class neighborhoods. He never, or rather hardly ever gets work in the rich community. It's as if they actively seek out the poor downtrodden looking for a better life mexican. They kill him as far price on estimates go. This was all like 5 years ago. Fast forward to today and the government has given prioritized loans to non-whites and the market is completely saturated with construction businesses. He's on the verge of just selling out and getting out of it all together because he is unable to compete . The local area knows that hiring him means they're helping their literal neighbor, but in the end they don't care they just want whatever's fucking cheap

@PeterPower @WoodshopHandman @yockeypuck @deprecated_ii @hazlin bro let me give you an example from today. Scooter Boomer was at the grocery store in front of me. Small grocery store that carries mostly local products and hi great stuff. There's not really much off-brand items there. About a third of a size of a normal Whole Food . Boomer is bitching at the manager because they say that their prices are too high . Manager explains that they Source most of their items from local farmers and beekeepers and ranches... Boomer gets pissed and tells him that they're not going to make it if they can't offer some cheaper items for those on a fixed income . Manager explains that they are as cheap as they possibly can be that they want to shop there too and they're not trying to pay bloated prices . Boomer leaves his entire scooter cart filled and Waddles out the door. I get out to the parking lot and he's getting in his 2023 Duramax King Cab Chevy truck with a big fucking decal on the back window that says buy American. Lol perfectly sums up 99% of the Fox News enjoyer Boomer class

      • good help can't find good employers

Because the job market was broken on purpose to keep costs down above all other considerations.

I mean there is, you'll discover the lack if you try to staff a company of such people. For every 20 people that want to do such a job, maybe 1 will actually benefit your company.

And, I don't mean skills. Just a basic honest worker.

The company I mentioned, has several people who started with no skills at all, but they had, and kept a good attitude, and now they have all the skills required to fulfill their role.

Using recruiting websites, has produce almost a 100% washout rate. In fact, it is so bad, I'm betting there is some sort of algorithm that sends shit people to small businesses.

I don't buy the sob stories I hear from employers because I've been the guy who can't get so much as a phone call for the better part of a decade, and I've known a lot of other guys in the same boat. it's obvious to me that companies have no idea *at all* how to identify a good candidate when one comes along
