   Now, we have to use encrypted chat for practically everything (one of our services is an XMPP server with encryption). Back then, we didn't worry that someone was "tapping" our phone (old hardwired) or anything like that.

   Now, protests are planned with txt messages or other chat systems and of course, cops show up before protesters and declare it and illegal assembly.

   Now, you you don't use a device like a phone to pay for things at a gas station or buss fares....

   How stupid has the country gotten? Shit is going to hit the fan and so few people will know what to do.

     It's wild, but that's the reality i'm living in, have lived in, and will continue to live in until people realize that ActivityPub is an open platform, and no, I DON'T think that is going to change anytime soon.

     @xinjeisan Yep. That's what's controversial, apparently.

     Back in January (I think, I'm bad with dates) when BridgyFed was just announced, people REAMED Ryan for using the words "opt-out". Which is obviously how the platform is designed from the core up. He was blocked, defederated, insulted, threatened. It was ridiculous.

     Therefore, he made it so that you have to follow a bot before your account is able to be seen cross-platform, effectively killing the feature, because if you have to teach someone a lesson before you "sell" them on a project, you've already lost. It's going to lose if this continues because nobody who doesn't already know about it, will turn it on.

     Dead in the water for the actual use of the project, basically. I don't need to follow my Fedi friends' BlueSky accounts, i need to follow BlueSky accounts that AREN'T on Fedi...🤦♂️

     I've seen your posts from threads too. So far, your the only threads user I've seen. When/if others show up, as amin on Beamship, we have discussed it and if it does "go south", won't hesitate to block but so far, your keeping it open for us 😜

     I'm from the old days with BBSs and open comms with all the chat systems. I remember having an XMPP connection with yahoo, Facebook, GoogleTalk and all that. Ya, I'm old 😂

     If Fakebook and TwitterDumb hadn't gone south, I'd probably still be on them. Here, it feels so much like before the corporate takeover and the cesspools, I love it.

     @bob @BeAware I was at the first MobileActive Convergence when they started talking about using stuff like that for activism and I thought, "Where is the weed and why didn't anyone share?"

     Worse yet, at the time, it was pretty clear everything was gonna get tapped because of the Patriot Act. They were oblivious then.

     Almost 2 decades later, here we are, still oblivious.

     @knowprose @bob Yeah. I do understand that mindset. However, if EVERYONE is doing activism. Nobody will be doing things that make our lives just happier in general, not necessarily "life or death" things. I think there SHOULD be balance between the two, but I do know that the balance is heavily outweighed.

     I'm a Dessert Storm vet and over 12 years on the streets now. Up until recently, I carried a copy of the US Constitution everywhere and had read it so much that it was decaying.

     Everyday I witness local, state and federal government take away the US Constitution that I swore to defend from homeless people. I'm not into politics, only the sickness I see everyday.

     I've been in a lot of protests and such but when I see a homeless camp swept and no one is fighting or I see things like what is going on at colleges for a completely different country but not one person will put that kind of effort into protecting a homeless person...

     @BeAware @bob Activism has it's place. Humanity needs saving. Leave 'em be.

     They're gonna have to live with it, and when they realize it, they may change tack.

     I don't think we #GenX had the hubris for the sort of activism we're seeing, but it's not necessarily a bad thing.

     I did as much as I could without doing harm. That's the line I think they haven't figured out.
