The intention of desensitization is to expose individuals to an event/action that would normally trigger an emotional and/or physiological response that is potentially uncontrollable by the one experiencing it (IE fainting at the sight of something), and allowing them to develop the ability to control that response, so THEY can maintain control of themselves during that event/action.
You can apply this concept to just about anything - a kid giving a piano recital to an audience can be deemed "traumatic" to them, competitive sports, public speaking, hunting, etc... Life, for nearly all forms of it, experience this concept - a vast majority of which have to so that they can survive.
To call this "traumatic mind control" is extremely hyperbolic and honestly just retarded.
